Occultation of Imam (a.s.) – An Immense Deprivation

Occultation of Imam (a.s.) – An Immense Deprivation

Allah, the Blessed, the High says in the Holy Quran:

“The day when We will call every people with their Imam”

(Surah Bani Israel , Verse 71)

Allah, the High at various places, has promised guidance to the people. To fulfill His promise, He sent Prophets and Messengers (peace be on them all) one after another, who called people towards His religion, recognition and worship. When the Prophethood was completed with the advent of the last prophet Mohammad (s.a.w.a.), He introduced Imamat in the progeny of Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) so that people may turn to them and save hemselves
from straying and attain eternal happiness. The greatest and the highest bounty of Allah from amongst His bounties is the presence of Imam (a.s.). No other bounty can match this bounty. Other bounties have reached their relative position due to this bounty, without which all other endowments are imperfect. As it is mentioned in the Holy Quran,

“This day (on the day of Ghadeer) I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor on you and chosen for you Islam as a religion.”

(Surah Maaedah, Verse 3)

“And as for the favor of your Lord, do announce (it).”

(Surah Zoha, Verse 11)

Our guidance and salvation depends upon the fourteen infallibles therefore, it is obligatory upon us that we discuss and talk about this bounty.

We would like to make an important point over here. And that is, a believer should never give preference to any bounty over that of the mastership and love of Ahle Bait (a.s.). To consider the gift of ‘Mastership of Ahle Bait (a.s.)’ as light or equating it with other endowments like wealth, children, business etc. will lead to our destruction and devastation.

The Islamic nations received the distinction of living with the thirteen infallibles and reap benefits from their holy lives. However, the majority breached their covenant with their Lord and the people who actually remained loyal and faithful could easily be counted on fingers.

Instead of deriving benefits from their existence, the people oppressed and tortured them no end. Their barbarism and brutality had reached to such pits that had they been told to oppress the family of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.), they would have not been able to repress than what they actually did. Notwithstanding such a disgraceful demonstration of ingratitude and inhumanity, the Merciful Allah did not snatch away the bounty of the physical presence of the infallibles (a.s.) from amongst the people, till the commencement of the occultation of Imam Mahdi (a.s.).

It should be borne in mind that if Allah bestows bounty on any one without him deserving it, then this bounty of Allah is His ‘Grace’. If He snatches the bounty after sometime, it is not injustice because he had bestowed it without the person deserving it. On the contrary, it will be sheer justice. It is not obligatory on Allah that He should always deal with ‘Grace’. But on occasions, He deals with His grace and on others, with justice. None of His dealings are devoid of wisdom. It is not necessary that we should know the prudence behind all His actions. Whatever He does is sheer wisdom, whether we comprehend or not. We can comprehend the wisdom behind any of His action only in the light of the Holy Quran and the traditions. The intellect of men cannot comprehend the rationale behind His actions.

However, from the divine practices of Allah is the practice which has been related in Holy Quran and the traditions is:

“Surely Allah does not change the condition of people until they change their own condition…”

(Surah Ra’d, Verse 11)

“This is because Allah has never changed a favor which He has conferred upon the people until they change their own condition…”

(Surah Anfaal, Verse 53)

Imam Mohammad Baqir (a.s.) in the exposition of the above Quranic verses says:

“It is a definite and certain decree of Allah that when He bestows a bounty on His servant, He does not snatch it till the servant commits a sin which becomes the cause of its deprivation. This is the meaning of Allah’s word “Surely Allah does not change the condition of people until they change their own condition”.

(Tafseer Noor al-Saqalain, vol.2, pg. 488)

In brief, the actions of the people are the cause of Allah, the High, confiscating the bounty from them. Ameerul Momineen Ali Ibn Abi Taalib (a.s.) in the opening sentences of his famous supplication, Dua-e-Kumayl, says:

“O Allah! Forgive those of my sins which convert the bounties (into calamities).”

The Divine practice shows that Allah’s Mercy takes precedence over His Wrath. Therefore, Allah seizes the bounty only when people are ungrateful and unappreciative.

Thus, we are not aware of the actual wisdom behind the occultation of Imam-e-Asr (a.t.f.s.) and according to some traditions; Imam Zaman (a.t.f.s.) will himself give the reason of his occultation when he reappears. However, one of the reasons that we are familiar with is that occultation is due to the anger of Allah on account of the ingratitude of the people. The physical presence of Imam (a.s.) among the people was the greatest bounty of Allah upon the people that was snatched from them. While explaining the importance of the physical presence of Imam (a.s.), Imam Reza (a.s.) says: “Imamat is complete religion, the foundation of Islam, the basis of all goodness, the discipline of the nation, the path to Allah and the light through which people acquire guidance.”

Imam Mohammad Baqir (a.s.) says: “Islam is based on five principles – Namaz, Zakat, Fasting, Haj and the Mastership (of Ahle Bait (a.s.)) and the m anne r in which importance has been given to Mastership no other thing has been given such importance.”

(al-Kaafi, vol.2, pg.18)

While explaining the following Quranic verse, Imam Mohammad Baqir (a.s.) says:

“Then believe in Allah and His Messenger and the light which We have sent down”, “By Allah in the above verse, ‘light’ refers to the Imams from the progeny of Mohammad (s.a.w.a.) till the day of Judgement and by Allah these are the ‘lights’ which Allah has sent. And by Allah, they are the ‘lights’ in the heavens and on the earth… By Allah the ‘light’ of Imam in the hearts of the believers, is brighter than the shining sun.”

(Tafseer Noor al-Saqalain, vol. 5, pg. 321)

When people disregarded this great bounty, Allah, the High concealed Imam-e-Zaman (a.s.) from their eyes. No other calamity can be greater than this concealment of Imam (a.s.) from the sights of the people. The simile of the above is like a child who is left alone in darkness to seek out his way, he is not aware of its beginning nor its end. Resultantly, he will fall a prey for the beast or will become needy of somebody.

Imam Mohammad Baqir (a.s.) says:

“When Allah, the Blessed and the High is angry with His creation then He makes us – the Ahle bait (a.s.), distanced and away from the people.”

(al-Kaafi, Chapter of Occultation, Tradition No. 31)

The presence of Imam (a.s.) among the people to solve their questions and problems is a divine grace of immeasurable magnitude. The concealment of Imam (a.s.) from the sights of the people and their helplessness to reach the Imam (a.s.) is the justice of Allah. Grace takes precedence over justice but the disobedience and ungratefulness of the Muslims has replaced the grace of Allah with His justice. It is an irrefutable reality that the benefits that we would have enjoyed in the physical presence of Imam (a.s.), are not available now. It is a great loss and nothing can make the loss good. We only are to be blamed for the loss and nobody else.

One question arises here: The cause of occultation was due to the disobedience and ingratitude of the earlier Muslims. Then why are we suffering for their action and misdeeds Is it not injustice ?

Answer: Firstly, as we have already mentioned that if Allah has kept His Proof among the people, then it is His grace. And if He conceals Him, then it is His justice.

Secondly, we are also responsible for the occultation of Imam-e-Asr (a.s.) by our conflicts, internal fighting, sins, misdemeanors, etc. These actions are the cause of prolonging the occultation of Imam (a.s.). Imam-e-Zaman (a.s.), in one of his ‘Tawqee’ to Sheikh Mufeed (a.r.) writes: “If the hearts of our Shias (may Allah give them the taufeeq of His obedience) were united in their fulfillment of the covenant (of Shiasm), then certainly our meeting with them would have not been delayed”.

The words of Imam (a.s.) show that our disunity not only makes him sorrowful but is also a cause of prolongation of his occultation and loneliness. In other words, our actions and sins are the cause of sorrow and grief for our Imam (a.s.). If we sincerely love our Imam (a.s.) then let all of us take this oath that we will not commit sins and disobey Allah the lmighty, as these sins deprive us of our Imam and consequently, we lose the greatest bounty of Allah, the High. On the flip side, if we keep our covenant and refrain from sins, we can undo the misdeeds of the earlier Muslims and can obtain the privilege of an earlier meeting with our Imam (a.s.)

Doctrine of the Mahdi

Doctrine of the Mahdi

Many people have narrated from the prophet concerning the reappearance at the end of the time, of the Mahdi who is a descendent of his daughter Fatimah, and how he will spread justice and equity throughout the world, after it has been overcome by injustice and oppression. All sects of Muslims have accepted this good tiding, but with different interpretations.

It is not a new opinion or idea that has come into existence only among the Shi'a, and in which they were prompted to believe by oppression, dreaming of someone who would come to clear the world of injustice, as some malevolent sophists have suggested. On the contrary, the concept of the reappearance of the Mahdi has been well known among all Muslims, and they have believed in it.
Proof of this is that some persons falsely called themselves Mahdi during the first century after the advent of Islam; such were the leaders of the Kaysaniyyah;s the `Abbasids and the `Alawiyyah.

Only because people believed in the Mahdi could these persons have deceived them, exploited their belief and seized power. So they made their claims in order to impress the people and spread their influence.
We, the Shi'a, on the one hand, believe in the truth of the Islamic religion as the last Divine religion, and have no expectation of another religion to come and reform humanity. But, on the other hand, we observe oppression and corruption spreading day by day throughout the world, resulting in a total lack of justice and improvement anywhere in the inhabitable countries of the globe.

We have also witnessed Muslims foresaking every Islamic principle, commandment and law in every single Islamic country.
We know that we must wait for the reestablishment of Islam in all its power, to reform this world, drowned as it is in oppression and corruption.

Naturally, with such diversity of opinion among people pretending to be Muslim as we see today, it is impossible that the superiority of Islam should return, unless a great reformer appears to protect it, and, through Divine providence, unite people and eradicate the error, perversion and wrong which has become admixed with Islam. To be sure, this guide must possess such a great position, such general authority and such supernatural power as to fill the earth with justice and equity when it is full of evil, injustice and wrong.
In short, the observation that humanity is in a pitiful condition, the assertion of the truth of Islam, and its position as the last religion leads to the expectation of such a great reformer (mahdi) to bring salvation to the world.

All Muslim sects and the peoples of other religions believe in this expectation, the difference being that the Imamate sect believes that this reformer is a definite person, that he is the Mahdi, and that he was born in 256 A.H. (870 A.D.), that he is alive now, the son of Imam Hasan al `Askari, and that his name is Muhammad.
Many narrators have passed to us ahadith (pl. of hadith) from the Prophet and his Household concerning his birth and his absence.

The Imamate must continue uninterrupted, although the Imam may live hidden among mankind until Allah wills that he reappear on a certain day, a Divine mystery known only to Him. The fact that he has lived for such a long time is a miracle granted to him by Allah, and it is no more amazing than the miracle of the start of his Imamate for humanity at the age of five, when his father's life was taken away. Nor is it any more surprising than the miracle whereby `Isa talked with people from his cradle, and was appointed a prophet when still an infant. From the physiological point of view, it is quite certain that to live more than the natural span of life, or more than the imagined natural span, is not impossible, even though medical science is not yet able to prolong human life as much as possible.
But while medicine is unable to do this, Allah can, for He is All-Powerful and Omnipotent. For the Qur'an states that Nuh lived to a very old age, and that `Isa is alive now, and once one has accepted Islam, there can be no denying what the Qur'an says. It is incomprehensible that a Muslim should dispute the possibility of these things, while at the same time calling himself a believer in the Glorious Qur'an.

We should remember at this point that the expectation of this saviour and reformer, the Mahdi, does not mean that Muslims should stand idle in their religion, or abandon their religious duties, but that they should perform all the Divine commandments and make every endeavour to seek out the way of Truth.
It is an obligation for them to fight for Islam, to put the principles of Islam into practice, to order others to do likewise and to prohibit them as far as possible from doing wrong. As the Prophet said:

"Every one of you is a shepherd, and every one is responsible for his flock."
Therefore it is wrong for a Muslim to pay no attention to his religious duties, and to abandon them because he is expecting the Mahdi, the one who brings good tidings; because such an expectation must not induce us to have no responsibility or duty, or to postpone any of our actions, and it will not leave people aimless like animals.

Love of Imam Mehdi AJF

Love of Imam Mehdi AJF

The Importance of Love for Imam Mahdi (A.S.)

Every living being is overwhelmed with emotions of love and attachment. These are emotions that man is very familiar with, and everyone has experienced these strong emotions at some stage in his life. However, those who reflect on these emotions are few. Even fewer are those who comprehend the reality and foundation of the emotions. We all understand that love can increase and decrease as well. An intense feeling of love and attachment can melt the most hardened of hearts. It can make a person weep and it can also make a person smile. Love can be witnessed in the battlefield, over there it can be heard from the resonance of swords and spears striking each other. It can also be witnessed in more peaceful and secure times. Indeed love can have a powerful influence on an individual.
An incident in this regard from the highly acclaimed compilation - Najmus Saqib (by Muhaddiss-e-Noori) is worth mentioning over here. Once a group of people belonging to a nomadic Qazaak tribe had lost its way in the desert. They were totally exhausted from trying to find a way out of the desert. Suddenly they saw some smoke emanating from a hillock at a distance. Out of curiosity they went towards the hillock and saw a caravan on the other side. The leader of the caravan was very benevolent and generous and seeing their worn out condition invited them for a meal. When the Qazaaki group had their fill they left. But seeing the wealth of the caravan, they were tempted and they turned back in order to plunder the caravan. The leader of the caravan was quick to discern their intentions and he drew his sword from its sheath. He drew a line on the ground and announced in an awesome tone, 'If anyone tries to cross this line, I will behead him.' His voice was so terrifying, that the group of Qazaakis fell down from their mounts. May the lives of our parents be sacrificed upon the benevolent and generous leader of the caravan. O the avenger of Imam Husain's (a.s.) blood!
Love can be an overwhelmingly powerful emotion. Love has in it the ability to drown the person with its intensity and force. However, love has several levels and grades. It has ways and it has gateways; each gateway has its own peculiarities and a different approach should be adopted for every gateway. Likewise, the gateway of Imam's (A.S.) love has its own peculiarities and requires a completely different approach. We must try to discern the path towards Imam's (A.S.) love and attachment. We must try to gauge the different levels of his love and the difficulties involved in the path of his love. We must try to assess the requirements and prerequisites of the love and whether we find those criteria in ourselves. Only after understanding all the prerequisites and conditions involved in Imam's (A.S.) love, we might claim - We love Imam-e-Zamana (A.S.). But if negligence overpowers us, then it can expel us from the domain of Imam's (A.S.) love and attachment. That is why it is crucial that we understand this love and its criteria.
The love of Imam (A.S.) resides in the heart. For this love to grow and be nurtured, the heart must be clean and pure from all corruption. We have to see how Allah, the Benevolent and the Merciful, has guided us towards his love. Imam Mahdi (A.S.) is the last successor and vicegerent of the Chief of the Apostles (a.s.) and the Seal of the Prophets (a.s.). He is Allah's Proof upon His creatures. Therefore we should also assess the relationship between love and the raising of Prophets (a.s.). We should see how Imam (A.S.) reminds men of Allah's signs, how he purifies the souls, how he illumines man's existence with the radiance of love. We should see how our teachers and guides have prepared us for purification with love and how they have awakened us for this love. Only then will we understand that we can never adequately return Imam's (A.S.) love for us and fall woefully short in this regard.
However, history does throw up instances of several personalities who were from an immaculate and cultured background, who possessed amazing prowess and had remarkable accomplishments to their credit and were supported by an unseen force in their efforts. These personalities tread the path of love and affection for Imam (A.S.). It is not easy to tread on the path which they strode, however it is not impossible either. That's why we say - we can never 'adequately' return Imam's (A.S.) love.
However, even the inadequate love and attachment that we have for Imam (A.S.) is very powerful and carries tremendous impact. To reach that position requires a Herculean effort. Let us take a look at what the scholars have had to say in this regard.
Scholars assert that love is an emotion that can only be experienced. It is inherent in man's nature. It is an emotion that cannot be defined by mere phrases. Love is too profound for that. However for the sake of litterateurs and writers we can state the definition of love in dictionary is described as, 'Love is an emotion that introduces gentleness and harmony in man's nature'. That emotion which inculcates harshness and severity in man's nature is called hatred, Love flows from recognition and comprehension. Therefore as recognition increases, love also increases.
The above definition outlines the meaning of love and hatred. Both these emotions are closely linked to man's conscience and heart. It is a widely accepted fact that Allah has introduced love to the human heart. Here we are discussing two emotions - love and hatred. To sustain love it is important that man refrains from certain actions and performs others. So every despicable act must be condemned and one must not think of performing such actions, since it will have a destructive effect on man's ability to love. On the other hand, every praiseworthy act must be lauded and man must try his best to rush towards that action, as this will give a fillip to love in his heart. The illustrious scholar and prolific writer Allamah Murtuza Mutahhari (a.r.) has dealt with this topic in detail in his renowned book, "Polarization around the character of Ali Ibne Abi Talib (a.s.)". However, to discuss details of the book over here is beyond the scope of this short treatise. In brief, it is imperative for us to act on the obligations and necessary conditions of love, to identify the pre-requisites of love and to discharge them in the best possible manner. Indeed these are the necessary qualifications of love and we must abide by them if we want love to blossom in our hearts. At the same time, we must not ignore the other prerequisite of love - avoiding all such actions that support and give a fillip to hatred. These actions not only further hatred in a person, but also inhibit the emotion of love.
Mankind, Allah's most noble creation has derived its Arabic term - Insaaniyat from Uns. Allah, Who has created man, has outlined adequate means for his survival and progress. Let us glance at the Holy Quran and see what it has indicated in this regard.
Allah, the Almighty, has announced in the Quran
"Surely the (true) religion with Allah is Islam" (Surah Aale Imran, Verse18)
In order to proclaim His path and religion, Allah, the Almighty, raised a number of prophets (a.s.), who guided man towards the divine command. Finally, Allah raised His greatest Apostle, Prophet Mohammad (s.a.w.a.) and announced in the Quran
"He it is Who raised among the illiterates an Apostle from among themselves, who recites to them His communications and purifies them, and teaches them the Book and the Wisdom, although they were before certainly in clear error." (Surah Jumah, Verse 2)
In Islam, it is important to purify the self by reciting the Quranic verses. If the self is not purified, then wisdom and Quranic teachings will be of no benefit. Indeed only if the self is purified, will the brilliance of wisdom and the Quran will permeate in the self and illumine the dark recesses of the heart. With this, man's faith and certainty in Allah increases manifold. With the increase in certainty and faith in Allah, man testifies to Allah's Word and his nature is overwhelmed with love for Allah. Allah declares,
"...Those who believe are stronger in love for Allah." (Surah Baqarah, Verse 165)
This is the reason why Imam Husain (a.s.) most willingly sacrificed his life in the way of his Lord out of sheer love and devotion. His face bore a striking radiance with the love of his Lord. Since our discussion is veering from Islam to faith (eemaan) and from faith to love, it is imperative to see how often Allah has discussed love in the Holy Quran. Love (Mohabbat) and attachment (Mawaddat) are two words very closely linked to each other. Both these terms have been used in the Quran extensively. We see the word love appearing in the Quran 115 times, while attachment is repeated 28 times. And these words are always used in relation to and as an interpretation of faith and love. Another version of the love Ishq has not been used in the Quran at all. However, we see this word appearing in the traditions of the infallibles (a.s.). For instance, the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) declares
'The best of men is the one who loves worship.' (Usul-e-Kafi, vol. 2, Chapter of Worship, tradition 3)
The word Ishq means 'excessive love'. Litterateurs believe that this word is more often used to convey illicit and forbidden love. However, the prophetic tradition we have narrated earlier negates this view, as the word has been used to convey love for excessive worship, which is a commendable action. We have also used this word to convey similar implications, never alluding to the illegitimate form of love.
Love for Imam-e-Zamana (A.S.) is the cause of our existence, the most important objective of our lives and the aim of our creation. We love our Imam (A.S.) and are intensely attached to him. Indeed this is what the religion of Islam instructs us. When the early Muslims wanted to thank the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) for his efforts in the way of Islam, they approached him (s.a.w.a.) and said, 'O Prophet of Allah (s.a.w.a.), indeed you have taken us out from the darkness of ignorance and we had the taufeeq of accepting Islam at your hands and thereby we were illumined with the light of faith. We were disgraced but you honored us. We were deviated but you guided us. With your grace and favors, Allah gave peace to our distressed hearts. How can we repay you for your efforts in the propagation of the prophetic message?' Allah revealed to the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.),
'Say: I do not ask of you any reward for it but love for my near relatives' (Surah Shura, Verse 23)
Then those who understood the underlying message behind this Quranic verse acted upon it. There were others who ignored this command.
But the true lovers did not let anything come in between their love and attachment for the Ahle Bait (a.s.). One such group of lovers were in Karbala. They were so intense in their attachment, that Imam Husain (a.s.) proclaimed, 'I have got companions that neither my grandfather (s.a.w.a.), nor my father (a.s.) nor my brother (a.s.) could get.'
These were the companions who repaid the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) for his efforts towards Islam, by attaching themselves to his progeny. They acted on this Quranic verse
'those who believe are stronger in love for Allah' (Surah Baqarah, Verse 165)
In fact, they gave ample proof of this by shedding their blood in the way of Islam. And Allah addressed their leader (Imam Husain (a.s.)) as Al-Nafsul Mutmainnah
Allah, the Almighty, declares in the Quran that a favor can be repaid only with another favor. The grace and favor of the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) in his propagation of Islam is something that can never be truly repaid by us. Love is the only thing that makes understand the importance of this favor and helps us adorn our character. The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) used to beseech Allah
'O Allah! Don't let a transgressor confer a favor upon me, thereby introducing his love in my heart.'
This tradition highlights an important fact that conferring a favor leads to love, even if that favor is from a disbeliever. Indeed humanity and Islam owe their existence to Imam Husain (a.s.). If the incident of Karbala had not occurred, Islam's appearance would have changed completely and it would have been unrecognizable from the Prophet's (s.a.w.a.) Islam. If Karbala had not been there true faith would have been considered as what Yazid was observing, Allah forbid! Many of the prohibited acts would have been made permissible and many of the permissible acts would have been made prohibited.
Indeed love for Imam Husain (a.s.) is the reward of the prophethood of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.). This is because Imam (a.s.) rescued Islam, Allah's chosen religion, which was propagated by his grandfather, the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.). O lovers of Imam Husain (a.s.)! The criterion for love is to follow the beloved in letter and in spirit and to give preference to his wishes and desires over our own. We should pay attention to what Imam Husain (a.s.) has said concerning his ninth son, Allah's last proof, and we should try to act upon it. We should mould our behavior and disposition according to it and we should be careful that we are not accounted among the ungrateful ones.
Abdul Rahman bin Sulait narrates that Imam Husain (a.s.) said, 'There will be twelve guides from amongst us. The first one is Ameerul Momineen (a.s.) - Ali b. Abi Talib (a.s.), while the last one is my ninth son the Qaim (A.S.). Through him Allah will enliven the dead earth and will make the rightful religion subdue all other religions even if this displeases the apostates. There is an occultation for him, which will be the cause of one group of Muslims rejecting him and returning to disbelief after belief, while another group will continue to believe in him and will remain steadfast in their faith. Those who will remain steadfast will become the target of taunts and it will be said to them, if reappearance is indeed a promise then when will the promise be fulfilled. Those who are patient and steadfast on the intense difficulties of occultation will attain the status of a warrior who has done jehad alongside the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) against the infidels." (Kamaluddin, vol. 1, chapter 30)
The above tradition related by Imam Husain (a.s.) highlights a few very pertinent points.
a) Allah's final proof will be the ninth son of Imam Husain (a.s.).
b) He will rise one day after his occultation.
c) His occultation will be prolonged.
d) Allah shall subdue all other religions with the religion of truth.
e) He shall enliven the earth after its deterioration.
f) The nation shall be divided in two sections. One shall steadfastly believe in him while the other shall reject him.
g) The steadfast ones shall be subjected to intense difficulties and calamities.
h) The steadfast group shall enjoy the same position as that of the early Muslims who did jihad alongside the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) against the apostates.
This tradition underlines the importance of love for Imam Mahdi (A.S.). The bond of love must be firm and resolute. It should not be that we accept Imam (A.S.) by our tongues and fall short in our actions. It should not be that we become despair about the rise of the nation. Even if we aren't struck by pessimism and doubt, it should not be that we believe in Imam (A.S.) as if it is folklore of a person who will rise one day and will establish truth and justice and will usher in an era of goodness where no evil will exist and in this entire affair we don't have to do anything except sit and watch.
This is the time when we should sit back and reflect on ourselves. We should for a moment consider the loyal companions of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) who accompanied him (s.a.w.a.) in the battles and willingly gave up their lives to attain martyrdom. Indeed their character, certainty, determination, faith, love for Allah and love for His Apostle were so firm and unshakeable that we get some idea of what is expected from us. Then we realize that we have not fulfilled the obligations of love. We have not honored the pre-requisites of attachment. And if it is not so then why is the occultation of Imam (A.S.) being prolonged to such an extent? Imam's (A.S.) reappearance depends upon the steadfast ones of the Islamic nation who are being disgraced but are patient and steadfast on difficulties and everyday recite the verse
'I bear witness in letter and in spirit that certainly you are Imam Mahdi (A.S.).' (Ziyarate Salaamullahil Kaamil, Mafaateehul Jenaan)
To perform religious obligations today is a Himalayan task. To strive and struggle with the self against the calamities and disputes in this age and to nurture love and affection (for Imam (A.S.)) is indeed difficult. We are passing through the era about which Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) had said "when the earth shall be filled with injustice and oppression". Satan is working overtime to deviate the people. Man is involved in all kinds of diseases, related to the body and the soul. There are new calamities emerging every day. The prophesies of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) about the last era are unfolding in front of our eyes. There are a thousand means of deviation and destruction but hardly any source of survival. Man's intellect is stumped and the whole society is engulfed in this epidemic and is unable to decide on a particular course of action, no matter how simple it is.
Let us have a glance of the past and the present. We are living in an age far worse than the age of the Ummayads and the Abbasids. Despite the torment and persecution of those eras, the people had the good fortune of witnessing the Imams (a.s.) in their midst. They could approach the Imams (a.s.) and reap the benefits of their radiant teachings. The glorious traditions of the infallibles (a.s.) and their guidance illumined the darkest recesses of their existence. The love of the Imams (a.s.) in the hearts of the Shias overcame every other distraction, be it wealth, status or the love of this world. The Shias ignored everything else in favor of the Imams (a.s.) and their teachings.
There was a poor and destitute companion of Imam Sadiq (a.s.). One day in the presence of Imam (a.s.), he made mention of his poverty and compared it to the wealth of the attendants of the Abbasids. Imam Sadiq (a.s.) on hearing of this comparison removed a bag of gold coins and gave it to the companion and said, 'You can take this, however, I would like you to return the love and attachment that you have for me in your heart.' The companion immediately realized the fallacy in his comparison (between himself and the Abbasid attendants) and continued to lead the rest of his life in poverty and thanked Allah for the love of the Ahle Bait (a.s.). Similarly the companions of Imam Husain (a.s.) must have been deeply stirred and roused by this statement of their master, 'O Allah! Indeed what has one gained by losing You? And what has one lost after gaining You?' (Dua-e-Arafah)
Today the comparison between the lovers (of the Ahle Bait (a.s.)) and the rich will show even more disparity and the lovers will be outnumbered by the rich by a large margin.
However, the chain of Aal-e-Mohammad (a.s.) is continuing till date. It is not over as yet. Not only are the Shias saying this, but even the renowned and illustrious scholars of the Ahle Sunnah have admitted this in their compilations. They have recorded thousands of traditions to support their belief. Today Allah's Proof on the earth exists and is a means of security from disasters. Those who hold on to his support understand this only too well. Those who don't understand it can try taking the name of Imam (A.S.) and they will also see the results. Indeed the lovers of Imam (A.S.) have found a strange soothing effect in his name that helps them overcome the most trying of calamities.

Enmity Toward the Ahl-al-Bayt (A.S.)

Enmity Toward the Ahl-al-Bayt (A.S.)

The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.): There will be twelve Imams after me, nine of them are the grandsons of Imam Husayn (A.S.) and the ninth is the Qa'im. So blessed are those who would love them and woe to those who would be hostile to them.
The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.): If a person worships Allah for a thousand years between "Safa" and "Marva" (Two holy places in Makkah adjoined to Masjid al-Haram) and continues his worship for many more thousand years, but does not love us, Allah will cast him in the Hell-Fire. Then His Holiness(S.A.W.) recited this verse: "Say (O Muhammad) "I do not ask of you any recompense for (the toil of the prophetship) save love of (my) relatives" (42:23).
The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.): Only the illegitimate ones would feel enmity toward us.
The Effects of the Enmity Towards Ahl al-Bayt (A.S.)
Allah's Displeasure
The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.): The night when I was ascended (Miraj), I saw that it was written on the gate of the Paradise: "There is none to be worshipped but Allah, Muhammad (S.A.W.) is His Messenger, 'Ali(A.S.) is his friend, al-Hasan(A.S.) and al-Husayn (A.S.) are chosen by Allah, and Fatima(A.S.) is His chosen one. May Allah's curse befall upon those who are their enemies.
The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.): Know that whoever harbors the enmity of Muhammad's (S.A.W.) progeny, they will be raised on the Resurrection Day with this phrase written on his forehead: "Deprived of Allah's Mercy.
Imam Ali (A.S.): for those who harbor enmity toward us there shall be the onslaught of Allah wrath and dissatisfaction.
Entering the Group of Hypocrites
The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.): Whoever harbors enmity to Ahl al-Bayt is a hypocrite.
The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.): Be aware that if a man among my "Ummah" worships Allah, the Supreme and the High, all his life long but meets Allah, while feeling enmity and hatred towards my Ahl-Bayt and my followers, Allah Will disclose his hypocrisy. [Which means when his hidden nature is exposed by Allah, then people will come to know that he was a hypocrite.]
Abu Sa'id khudri: We the group of Ansar knew the hypocrites by the hatred they felt toward Ali ibn Abi Talib (A.S.).
Joining the Group of the Unbelievers
The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.): There are three things which alienate any person from me: Harboring the enmity of Ali ibn Abi Talib(A.S.), bearing grudge against Ahl-al-Bayt(A.S.) and whoever says that believing is limited to only what one pronounces.
Joining to the Group of Jews and Christians
Jabir ibn 'Abd Allah quotes the Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.): O people! Whoever bears any grudge toward the Ahl-al-Bayt (A.S.),shall be mustered with the Jews on the Resurrection Day. I asked: Even if he performs daily prayers and fasts? He replied: Yes, even if he fasts, performs the daily prayers and regards himself as a Muslim.
Imam al-Baqir (A.S.): A man came to the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Is anyone who professes "there is no god but Allah" a believer? He replied: Harboring enmity against us causes a person to be included among the Christians and the Jews. You shall not go to Paradise unless you love me. And whoever thinks that he loves me and at the same time feels enmity toward Ali (A.S.) is a liar.
Deprived of Seeing the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) on the Day of Judgment
The Messenger of Allah ( S.A.W.): Whoever is the enemy of my Ahl al-Bayt(A.S.) will not see me on the Day of Judgment. I will not see him either.
Appearing with Severed Hands on the Day of Judgment
The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.): The one who harbors enmity toward us indeed Allah will raise him with severed hands on Doomsday.
Deprived of the Intercession
Anas ibn Malik: I saw the Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.) walking toward Ali ibn Abi Talib's (A.S.) house reciting this verse: "And (during a part) of the night, forsake sleep for prayer, in addition to (obligatory prayers): maybe your Lord will exalt you to a praised position" (17:79). Then he said: O 'Ali! My Lord, the Supreme and the High has given me the right to intercede for my ummah, but this intercession was forbidden for those who are your enemies and harbor enmity against your sons.
To Become a Dweller in the Hell
The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.): I swear to the One who holds my soul in His hand, all those who are enemies of Ahl al-Bayt shall be thrown into the [Hell] Fire.
The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.): O sons of 'Abdul Muttalib! I have requested three things from Allah for you: That He may give you perseverance, may lead those who go astray and bestow knowledge on those who are ignorant. I also requested from Allah to make you generous, brave and kind. So if a man among you stands upright at the station of Ibrahim and "Rukn" and performs daily prayers and fasts, but meets Allah while feeling anger and hatred toward Muhammad's(S.A.W.) Ahl al-Bayt, shall enter the Hell.
Imam al-Sadiq (A.S.): Whoever becomes happy to know that Allah loves him, should follow us and obey Allah. Has he not heard the saying of Allah, the Glorious and the High that: "Say (O Muhammad (S.A.W.): If you love Allah, then follow me; Allah will love you and forgive your sins" (3:31)? I swear by Allah! All Servants who obey Allah, should follow us too. I swear by Allah that all those who follow us would be loved by Allah, I swear by Allah that all servants who refrain from following us, would become our enemies. I swear by Allah that whoever becomes our enemy is disobeying Allah and whoever dies while disobeying Allah, would be degraded and thrown into the Hell-Fire. Glory and praise be upon Allah who is the Sustainer of the worlds.
Imam al-Kazim (A.S.): Whoever is our enemy is the enemy of Muhammad (S,A.W.), and whoever is his enemy has harbored enmity against Allah and whoever is the enemy of Allah the Glorious and the High, deserves to be cast into the Fire. Thus no one would help him.
