The Long Life Span of Imam Mahdi (A.S.)
The Long Life Span of Imam Mahdi (A.S.)
According to traditions, Imam al-Mahdi (A.S.) was born in the middle of the month of Sha’ban, 255 A.H. and has been alive for more than twelve centuries. Even though living to such an age is against the norm that exists among the people of the world, the possibility of having an extended life has been solved and is therefore probable and believable. Now, we would like to take a look at the phenomenon of the extended life span from different points of view.
The Extended Life in the Qur’anic Point of view
In the Holy Qur’an, which is the most reliable Islamic documented source, there are several people reported to have had extended unnatural life spans. Some of those people mentioned are:
1. Noah (p.b.u.h.)
The Holy Qur’an states about Noah:
“And certainly We sent Noah to his people, so he remained among them a thousand years save fifty years.” (29:14)
2. Jesus, son of Mary (p.b.u.h.)
About Jesus, the Holy Qur’an states:
“And for their saying, ‘we killed the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, the apostle of Allah' – though they did not kill him nor did they crucify him, but so it was made to appear to them. Indeed those who differ concerning him are surely in doubt about him: they do not have any knowledge of that beyond following conjectures, and certainly they did not kill him. Rather Allah raised him up toward Himself, and Allah is all-mighty, all-wise ”
The main belief among the Shiite and Sunni scholars is this that Jesus (p.b.u.h.)is alive. He remained in the heavens in the same state he was in on the earth.
He went up to the heavens, did not drink of the sherbet of death, and will not do so until he descends at the end of the time on the earth and recites his prayers behind al-Mahdi (p.b.u.h.)1 So according to the Christian era, Jesus should be around 2000 years old. With this in mind, al-Mahdi’s age of 1150 years should not be impossible to consider.
3. Khidhr (p.b.u.h.)
Another person who has had an extended life span is the great Khidhr (p.b.u.h.). He is undoubtedly one of the divine Prophets. The miracle of his existence, which God had bestowed upon him, was that wherever he sat and wherever he went, no dried out or withered plant would remain in that state. In his presence, everything would become green and full of life. For this very reason, his name in Arabic is ‘Khidhr’ which means ‘green’. Even though he hasn’t been mentioned by name in the Holy Qur’an, the meeting between this wise experienced servant of Allah with Moses (p.b.u.h.) and the company he kept with him has been mentioned in the 20th chapter of the Holy Qur’an, al-Kahf (The Cave). Qur’anic commentators and interpreters (from both the Shiite and Sunni sects) have claimed that in verse 65 of al-Kahf, the phrase, “servant of Allah” refers to Khidhr (p.b.u.h.) 2.
[There] they found one of Our servants whom We had granted a mercy from Ourselves, and taught him a knowledge from our own.”
From the traditions of the Shiite Imams and the holy Ahl al-Bait(p.b.u.t.), we conclude that Khidhr is still alive. This belief is not particular to the Shiites alone, for the Sunnis have this belief as well. Diyar Bakri, a famous Sunni historian, has written: “The majority of scholars believe that Khidhr is alive.”3
Allamah Ganji Shafei’i has said: “The issue of Khidhr being alive is unanimously agreed upon by Sunni scholars.”4
Shams al-Haq ‘Azim ‘Abadi writes: “No criticism of al-Mahdi’s (p.b.u.h.)extended life is acceptable since both Jesus and Khidhr have had extended life spans and are alive.”5
4. The People of the Cave
Other people mentioned in the Holy Qur’an for their extended life spans are the People of the Cave.
“They remained in the Cave for three hundred years, and added nine more [ to that number].” (18:25)
As you can see, the Holy Qur’an mentions their having stayed alive for three centuries-without food or water in a deep sleep.
Which is more amazing? Someone who has remained alive for three hundred years without food or water, or someone who has stayed alive for hundred of years, but eats food, drinks water, walks, sleeps and wakes up?
From the Holy Traditions Point of View
Traditions from the Holy Prophet of Allah prove the possibility of an extended life span in humans. One of the people pointed out in the Prophet’s (p.b.u.h.) traditions for his long life span is the Dajjal. The Sunnis according to this tradition, believe that the Dajjal was born around the Prophet’s time and will continue to live until the end of the time.
Ahmad ibn Hanbal, after stating its source, narrates this tradition from the Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h.): « The Dajjal is alive (and like others), eats food and walks through the markets.”6
From the Logical Point of View
In addition to the Holy Book and the traditions, the sound judgement does not eliminate the possibility of extended life spans in humans, rather actually considers it a possibility. Intellect tells us that being careful about our health and hygiene can extend our life span, while not doing so can shorten it.
Philosophers and theologians have stated that the best reason for the possibility of something is the actual occurrence of that thing. This proof shows that because throughout history there have been recorded incidences of extended longevity, its recurrence would be possible from an intellectual point of view.
Khwajah Nasir al Deen Tusi has said: “Extended life spans have occurred for other than al-Mahdi (p.b.u.h.) and been recorded, and for this very reason it is pure ignorance to consider his longevity as improbable.”7
Allamah Tabataba'i stated: “There are no intellectual reasons or rules to denote the impossibility of an extended life span; therefore, we cannot deny it.”
The great Islamic philosopher, Avicenna has said: “Consider as possible whatever you hear about the strange things until you have no reason to reject it.”
In other words, it can be said that worldly matters cannot fall outside three categories: 1. The impossible. 2. The natural. 3. The supernatural and unusual
The third category, it is usually rejected out because it is unnatural and abnormal. We can see instances (in real life) where this takes place, such as the ill being cured by prayer. An extended life span can be looked at in the same way. It, too, seems hard to believe because it is something rather unnatural and abnormal, although the possibilities for its occurrence and existence are high.
The miracles of the Prophets (which prove their righteousness) are along the same lines. Jesus’ curing the blind, Moses’ transforming his cane into a serpent, and Muhammad’s (p.b.u.h.) splitting the moon in the sky; all done by the order and permission of the Creator are categorized as supernatural. So, from the intellect and logic point of view, there is no reason to say that humans must have a limited life span and cannot possess an extended one.
The Historical experience
Another fact that should be considered is the long history of humankind. If extended longevity had occurred at all, although not many, then, the repetition of the similar case or cases would have been deemed natural, logical and acceptable. It is obvious that narrations throughout history, especially those which have become known and familiar have implanted certainty and belief in us as to its possibility.
We can see that history books have mentioned many people who have had longer life spans than usual, in many cases detailing their biographies and ways of life. They include average people as well as the Prophets and great personalities in history. This evidence corroborates the possibility of the extended life span making it definite and absolute.
The Miracles and Divine Power
As we have seen, the Holy Qur’an, the noble traditions, intellect, and history, provide proof of the possibility and the existence of extended longevity. This has been documented and officially recognized. In addition to what we have discussed, another factor that proves that humans can have extended life spans is the miracle and power of God.
Yes, his Excellency, al-Mahdi (p.b.u.h.) continues to live, through Divine Power. The same God that made the flames of the fire cool and harmless for Abraham, that turned wet clay into a bird for Jesus and has kept him and Khidhr alive after centuries can do the same for al-Mahdi (A.S.)with His sublime power.8
Without a doubt, Imam al-Mahdi (A.S.) is not an average person; in fact he is the very special individual. As the noble Prophet of Islam had said: “He is the representative of ,God.” Therefore, God, Who deemed it proper (and also has the ability) to keep His enemies such as the Dajjal and Satan alive for such a long time, could do the same for his humble servant and representative on the earth.
Ganji Shafei’i wrote: “This (heavenly) order by coincidence has let three people remain (on the earth) two of them are pious, one of whom is a Prophet, the other, an Imam and the third, the Dajjal, is the enemy of God. Now that it has been made clear that the extended life span of Jesus and the Dajjal is true and such a thing exists, we should accept the same for the al-Mahdi (p.b.u.h.). This is in addition to knowing that al-Mahdi(p.b.u.h.) extended life span is solely according to God’s will and power.
Al-Mahdi(A.S.) is the sign of the Prophet (p.b.u.h.) and the al-Mahdi (A.S.), compared to the other two who are still alive is much more deserving of such a miracle; for if he(A.S.) remains alive, as narrated in the holy traditions, he is the leader of the end of the time and will fill the earth with peace and justice.9
The Philosophical Point of View
Philosophy states that there is a cause and reason for everything that is deemed possible. The effect does not exist until the cause comes into place. Everything that comes into existence needs a cause to become non-existent just as there should be a cause for everything that comes into existence. If there isn’t a cause for something to become non-existent, then the first cause continues producing its effect.
From this we conclude that everything that exists has a cause as well as everything that becomes non-existent. When we have a cause for becoming existent, we need a cause to become non-existent, otherwise the existence will continue.
The Biological Point of View
From a biological, medical or scientific point of view, the human life span does not have a specific time frame where exceeding it would be considered impossible. No scientist up to now has stated that a specified amount of years is the maximum limit of the human life span after which death would be certain. Indeed some scientists, from the east and west, old and new, have stipulated that the human life span is not limited and in fact humans can have power over their deaths by delaying it and thus extending their life spans. This scientific hypothesis encourages scientists to research and administer tests day and night in hope of success. Through these tests they have proved that death, is similar to other illnesses because it is an effect of natural causes which, if they could be discovered and altered, death can be delayed. Just as scientists have been able to discover remedies for different illnesses through research, they can do the same for death.10
Other living things such as plants and animals have also been observed to be different from others and have lived longer. For example, viruses can be considered the oldest beings. Viruses are amazing microorganisms, which if studied properly, may reveal the mystery of life. They are the cause of most illnesses in people, plants and animals. Archaeological findings show that viruses from over a hundred thousand years ago underwent development when put in cultures and still showed signs of life.
Hibernation has been shown to greatly increase life span.11 Hibernators can be studied at the actual time of hibernation to show what factor prevails in increasing the life span. Hibernation occurs during the winter season, although some animals go through a similar process during the summer as well. When an animal hibernates, there is a decrease in its energy needs and its body metabolism drops by 30-100 percent. Its body temperature drops to the temperature of its surroundings so that the body doesn’t shiver and the skin and hair do not stiffen. It can drop to only a few degrees above freezing, the heartbeat slows down and the reflexes stop.
Some animals may stay alive for long periods of time in extremely cold temperatures as some fish do in the Faeroe (islands NW of the Shetlands belonging to Denmark). Many living cells such as animal or human sperm (used for artificial insemination) or red globules (used for blood transfusion) can be maintained at freezing temperatures. Studying hibernation is especially intriguing because it can be a means of discovering the mystery of extended life spans.
The existence of people with extended life spans proves that there is no limit on the length of human life with or without exceptions. It is true that the majority of people die before they reach a hundred, but because this is the norm does not necessarily mean that going over a hundred and beyond is impossible. A good number of people have also been seen to have gone past a hundred years in age. The existence of people who have easily reached ages ranging from 150-250 years makes it rather clear that limits to the human life span are not defined. It really doesn’t make a difference if someone lives for 200 years or 2000, for both are unfamiliar and uncommon. As a conclusion to the biological view, aging is not an irreversible incident rather it is an illness with a remedy.
The View of Great Thinkers
1. French Professor Shebes, in his book, Hope for a Long Life, writes: “People can have longer and more active lives by utilizing the blessings of nature and the power of civilization itself and postpone the old age for several years.”12
2. Dr. Gilbert Hoers writes: “Today, medical science, with the help of dietetics, has been able to solve the aging problem. Unlike our forefathers, we can have hope for leading longer lives.”13
3. Professor Hettinger, one of the first people in developing cryogenic methods (the freezing of human bodies)14 writes: “People of the 21st century can live thousands of years through technology and what we have discovered.”15
4. Al-Hilal magazine (a popular and reliable Egyptian magazine) quoted from an English doctor: “Scientists have been able to increase the life span of fruit flies nine-hundred times. It has been done by keeping the flies away from poisonous and harmful materials and making their living conditions suitable. In comparison, if we consider the average human life span of 80 years, then a similar possible increase would expand human life by 72,000 years.”16
5. In 1956, at the Global Conference on Astronomy and Space, it was said that with the completion of photon engines in the future, the speed of missiles would approach the speed of light. Time, cells, and the body’s metabolism would be slowed down and according to calculations the life span of astronauts would greatly increase. At that speed, it would mean that if a million years passed, astronauts would age only a few years.17
From the Religions Point of View
If the problem concerning extended longevity is asked by materialists, the answer is always the same. We have summarized the views of doctors, biologists, scientists and of history. On the other hand, if the matter is asked by the people of God and religion, two items are supplementary to what has been previously discussed.
A. God’s Unlimited Power
All theists believe in the unlimited power of God and that He has power over everything. God, Who has created the east and west and maintained over 200 billion galaxies for millions of years with His power, will never be weak to maintain his vicegerent on the earth.
B. Examples in the Holy Books
There is no dispute amongst theists and followers of Divine Religions about the possibility of extended longevity and that there is no limitation on the human life span. All of the Holy Books mention many instances of extended life spans which makes the issue very clear and certain for their followers.
The Torah, the Holy Book of the Jews is also a reliable source for Christians, and it mentions numerous examples of individuals whose lives spanned a vast number of years. These are the different Prophets and their ancestors. Here we will mention only a few:
1. His Excellency, Adam, 920 years
2. Seth, the son of Adam, 912 years
3. Ēnosh, the son of Seth, 905 years
4. Kēnan, the son of Ēnosh, 910 years
5. Ma-hal'a.lel, the son of Kēnan, 895 years
6. Jared, the son of Ma-hal'a.lel, 963 years
7. Methuselah, the son of Enoch, 969 years
8. Lāmech, the son of Methuselah, 777 years
9. His Excellency, Noah, son of Lāmech, 950 years18
Based upon these accounts anyone who follows a Divine Religion and has accepted the existence and oneness of God would easily accept extended longevity as realistic and plausible and would have no doubt whatsoever concerning it. This might be why Sheikh Tusi says in his book, Al-Ghaybat (according to the Holy Qur'an, [The Thunder] al-Ra‘d, verse39, «
يمحوا الله ما يشاء و يثبت و عنده أم الكتاب
» “Allah effaces and confirms whatever He wishes and with Him is the Mother of the Book.”: As long as it is deemed advisable for the appearance of Imam al-Zaman (A.S.) to be delayed, the extension of his life is necessary and will continue. The secret to this mystery is with He who has the keys to the unknown and the Master Book.”
What we have discussed in this article is only a small portion of all the reasons and examples of extended longevity that the needs of this particular article could permit and we hope to provide better information and discussion on this topic in the future.
‘Oh Allah, peace be on your vicegerent, son of your vicegerents of whom obeying (them) you made obligatory (upon us). Observing their rights you made obligatory (upon us) and made them free from impurities, making them pure, clean. Oh Allah, help your religion, your holy men and him, his companions and the Shiites through him and make us one of them.’

Sifat-sifat Peribadi Syaidina Imam AlMahdi(A.S.)
Beliau adalah seorang yang badannya tegap, besar tinggi macam badan orang-orang Israel
(menurut pandangan orang-orang Melayu) dan bertubuh sederhana (menurut pandangan orang-orang
Arab). Kulitnya putih kemerah-merahan macam kulit orang Arab, dengan sedikit cenderung kepada
kehitam-hitaman seperti kulit orang Ajam. Wajahnya tampan dan seolah-olah bersinar laksana
bintang. Kepalanya besar, begitu juga dengan bentuk mukanya yang agak memanjang. Dahinya luas
dan lebar. Hidungnya mancung seperti hidung orang-orang Arab, tidak seperti lazimnya orang-orang
Ajam. Bulu keningnya nipis dan melengkung tetapi tidak bertemu antara kedua-dua belah. Biji
matanya besar manakala di pelupuk matanya, sentiasa kelihatan bercelak.
Pada pipi kanannya ada satu tahi lalat hidup yang besar, bukan semula jadi tetapi mendatang.
Jambangnya agak nipis tetapi janggutnya panjang, tebal dan lebat. Manakala gigi serinya bersinar dan
lazimnya berjarak. Pada tengah belikatnya terdapat satu cop kenabian berwarna hitam yang ditumbuhi
rambut. Bahunya lebar dan dadanya bidang. Kedua-dua belah pahanya renggang manakala daging
pahanya agak besar. Beliau sentiasa memakai serban terutama yang berwarna putih, manakala
jubahnya dua lapis berwarna putih, dari jenis Qutwani. Jubahnya agak pendek (tidak sampai ke buku
lali) dan adalah dari jenis yang belah dada terus ke bawah.
Kedua-dua belah tapak tangannya besar dan tegap. Beliau dikatakan seorang yang sukar
bertutur kata. Apabila sukar untuk menuturkan sesuatu, beliau akan menepuk paha kirinya dengan
tangan kanan. Secara amnya, perawakannya adalah sama dengan perawakan Rasulullah SAW. Beliau
seorang yang tidak gemuk dan tidak pula kurus. Beliau seorang yang berbadan tegap dan agak tinggi,
seperti tingginya orang-orang Israel. Beliau sentiasa kelihatan sihat dan gembira.
Semasa Imam Mahdi mula-mula zahir ke dunia ini sebagai pemerintah, beliau memakai
serban yang ada satu malaikat di atasnya. Malaikat tidak dapat dilihat oleh manusia biasa (kecuali
orang-orang yang Allah izinkan untuk dapat melihatnya) tetapi dapat didengar suaranya dengan jelas
oleh mereka yang menyeru, “Inilah dia Al-Mahdi, khalifah Allah. Oleh itu, ikutilah dia dengan ikhlas dan
yakin.” Kemudian akan keluar satu tangan yang menjulur dari arah serban itu, yang mengisyaratkan
kepada orang ramai supaya berbaiat kepada Imam Mahdi.
Imam Mahdi juga memiliki baju besi Rasulullah SAW yang baginda pakai semasa pergi
berperang, yang selepas kewafatan baginda SAW, tidak pernah dipakai orang kecuali apabila Imam
Mahdi zahir. Beliau juga memiliki sebilah pedang yang bernama Zulfakar, juga milik baginda SAW.
Pedang itu pernah digunakan oleh Sayidina Ali KMW dalam beberapa peperangan. Beliau juga
memiliki sehelai bendera merah yang diperbuat daripada kain bulu yang tertulis di atasnya dengan
warna hitam perkataan, “Bermula Perjanjian Itu Bagi Allah.”
Beliau tidak pernah membangunkan orang yang sedang tidur kecuali apabila masuk waktu
sembahyang. Beliau tidak menumpahkan darah manusia melainkan dengan hak, akan memerangi
bersungguh-sungguh orang-orang Islam yang meninggalkan sunnah Nabi SAW sehingga mereka
bertaubat dan meninggalkan bidaah dan khurafat itu, juga memerangi kaum kuffar dan musyrik yang
mahu melawannya. Setiap yang berlawanan dengan sunnah akan beliau hapuskan sehingga seluruh
manusia benar-benar kembali kepada akidah Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaah.
Beliau juga akan menjadi raja yang sangat besar seperti yang pernah dinikmati oleh Nabi
Sulaiman AS dan Iskandar Zulkarnain. Malah dikatakan pemerintahannya kali ini lebih besar dan
bererti berbanding kedua-dua mereka yang terdahulu itu. Beliau juga akan menghapuskan babi dan
kera, di samping menghancurkan salib-salib dan rumah-rumah berhala. Maksudnya setelah semua
orang memeluk Islam, mereka sudah tidak memerlukan lagi rumah-rumah berhala itu lalu mereka
sendiri yang meruntuhkannya. Cuma dikaitkan dengan Imam Mahdi kerana beliau yang sedang
memerintah seluruh manusia pada ketika itu.
Melalui kedua-dua belah tangannya, Allah menurunkan keberkatan yang melimpah ruah,
yang tidak pernah terbayangkan oleh sekalian manusia, sama ada yang hidup pada masa itu atau
sebelumnya, sehingga harta benda jadi melimpah ruah dan rezeki sangat murah. Penyakit-penyakit
jadi hapus dan binatang-binatang bisa hilang bisanya, boleh dimain oleh kanak-kanak tanpa takut
disengat atau digigit. Pemerintahannya sangatlah adil dan amat diredai oleh sekalian manusia, haiwan
dan malaikat.
Imam Mahdi memang seorang yang sangat gagah perkasa sehingga sekalian manusia amat
mengharapkan pertolongan, perlindungan dan keamanan daripada beliau. Allah SWT turut
mengurniakannya seramai tiga ribu malaikat yang sentiasa patuh dan taat segala perintah beliau.
Malaikat-malaikat ini akan memukul setiap orang yang menentang Imam Mahdi. Selain itu, Jibril dan
Mikail AS akan turut sama membantu beliau semasa sedang berperang dengan pihak musuh.
Imam Mahdi juga diberikan kelebihan menghapuskan segala macam bentuk fitnah,
memusnahkan segala macam bentuk judi, zina, arak, maksiat dan dosa. Beliau juga akan melenyapkan
segala bentuk riba dan harta haram. Pemerintah-pemerintah yang kafir semuanya akan tunduk
kepada pemerintahan beliau, dengan kebanyakan negara yang sebelumnya kafir akan terus memeluk
Islam, tanpa melalui peperangan. Tidak ada lagi parti-parti politik atau orang-orang yang cuba
menjadi ahli politik seperti yang sedang berlaku pada hari ini. Tidak ada orang yang dinamakan
sebagai pihak pembangkang kerana semuanya itu adalah warisan daripada sistem Barat yang telah
amat lapuk.
Keamanan akan benar-benar terjadi pada masa pemerintahannya sehingga kaum wanita
dapat mengerjakan haji dengan beberapa orang sahaja tanpa berasa takut langsung sepanjang
perjalanan pergi, semasa di Makkah dan dalam perjalanan pulangnya. Keamanan benar-benar wujud
di dalam hati, perasaan, fikiran dan lahiriah seluruh manusia, terutamanya yang beragama Islam. Umat
Islam rata-ratanya akan menjadi orang-orang yang saleh dan warak, tidak ada lagi orang-orang yang
derhaka kepada Tuhan. Tidak ada juga orang-orang yang berselisih faham,apatah lagi bergaduh,
walaupun hanya dua orang sahaja. Para wali dapat ditemui di tengah-tengah umat manusia, seperti
yang pernah berlaku pada zaman sahabat dahulu dan dapat pula diambil butir-butir hikmat daripada
keberadaan mereka itu.
Tanam-tanaman dan haiwan ternakan menjadi amat berkat dan melimpah ruah. Tanah-tanah
pertanian tidak perlu dibaja atau dijaga dengan susah payah lagi kerana tanah-tanahnya sudah amat
subur melalui curahan air hujan dan haiwan-haiwan perosak tanaman sudah tidak ada lagi. Secupak
benih yang ditanam mampu membuahkan sehingga tujuh ratus cupak apabila dituai. Buah-buahan
amat lebat dan keluar sepanjang masa, tidak lagi mengira musim. Pada masa itu, bumi ini akan
menjadi seolah-olah syurga yang disegerakan bagi para penduduknya.

Duty of Shias during the Occultation of Imam Mahdi (A.S.)
Allah, the Blessed, the High says in the Holy Quran:
"The day when We will call every people with their Imam"
(Surah Bani Israel, Verse 71)
Allah, the High at various places, has promised guidance to the people. To fulfill His promise, He sent Prophets and Messengers (peace be on them all) one after another, who called people towards His religion, recognition and worship. When the Prophethood was completed with the advent of the last prophet Mohammad (s.a.w.a.), He introduced Imamat in the progeny of Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) so that people may turn to them and save themselves from straying and attain eternal happiness. The greatest and the highest bounty of Allah from amongst His bounties is the presence of Imam (a.s.). No other bounty can match this bounty. Other bounties have reached their relative position due to this bounty, without which all other endowments are imperfect. As it is mentioned in the Holy Quran,
"This day (on the day of Ghadeer) I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor on you and chosen for you Islam as a religion."
(Surah Maaedah, Verse 3)
"And as for the favor of your Lord, do announce (it)."
(Surah Zoha, Verse 11)
Our guidance and salvation depends upon the fourteen infallibles therefore, it is obligatory upon us that we discuss and talk about this bounty.
We would like to make an important point over here. And that is, a believer should never give preference to any bounty over that of the mastership and love of Ahle Bait (a.s.). To consider the gift of 'Mastership of Ahle Bait (a.s.)' as light or equating it with other endowments like wealth, children, business etc. will lead to our destruction and devastation.
The Islamic nations received the distinction of living with the thirteen infallibles and reap benefits from their holy lives. However, the majority breached their covenant with their Lord and the people who actually remained loyal and faithful could easily be counted on fingers.
Instead of deriving benefits from their existence, the people oppressed and tortured them no end. Their barbarism and brutality had reached to such pits that had they been told to oppress the family of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.), they would have not been able to repress than what they actually did. Notwithstanding such a disgraceful demonstration of ingratitude and inhumanity, the Merciful Allah did not snatch away the bounty of the physical presence of the infallibles (a.s.) from amongst the people, till the commencement of the occultation of Imam Mahdi (a.s.).
It should be borne in mind that if Allah bestows bounty on any one without him deserving it, then this bounty of Allah is His 'Grace'. If He snatches the bounty after sometime, it is not injustice because he had bestowed it without the person deserving it. On the contrary, it will be sheer justice. It is not obligatory on Allah that He should always deal with 'Grace'. But on occasions, He deals with His grace and on others, with justice. None of His dealings are devoid of wisdom. It is not necessary that we should know the prudence behind all His actions. Whatever He does is sheer wisdom, whether we comprehend or not. We can comprehend the wisdom behind any of His action only in the light of the Holy Quran and the traditions. The intellect of men cannot comprehend the rationale behind His actions.
However, from the divine practices of Allah is the practice which has been related in Holy Quran and the traditions is:
"Surely Allah does not change the condition of people until they change their own condition..."
(Surah Ra'd, Verse 11)
"This is because Allah has never changed a favor which He has conferred upon the people until they change their own condition..."
(Surah Anfaal, Verse 53)
Imam Mohammad Baqir (a.s.) in the exposition of the above Quranic verses says:
"It is a definite and certain decree of Allah that when He bestows a bounty on His servant, He does not snatch it till the servant commits a sin which becomes the cause of its deprivation. This is the meaning of Allah's word "Surely Allah does not change the condition of people until they change their own condition".
(Tafseer Noor al-Saqalain, vol.2, pg. 488)
In brief, the actions of the people are the cause of Allah, the High, confiscating the bounty from them. Ameerul Momineen Ali Ibn Abi Taalib (a.s.) in the opening sentences of his famous supplication, Dua-e-Kumayl, says:
"O Allah! Forgive those of my sins which convert the bounties (into calamities)."
The Divine practice shows that Allah's Mercy takes precedence over His Wrath. Therefore, Allah seizes the bounty only when people are ungrateful and unappreciative.
Thus, we are not aware of the actual wisdom behind the occultation of Imam-e-Asr (a.t.f.s.) and according to some traditions; Imam Zaman (a.t.f.s.) will himself give the reason of his occultation when he reappears. However, one of the reasons that we are familiar with is that occultation is due to the anger of Allah on account of the ingratitude of the people. The physical presence of Imam (a.s.) among the people was the greatest bounty of Allah upon the people that was snatched from them. While explaining the importance of the physical presence of Imam (a.s.), Imam Reza (a.s.) says:
"Imamat is complete religion, the foundation of Islam, the basis of all goodness, the discipline of the nation, the path to Allah and the light through which people acquire guidance."
Imam Mohammad Baqir (a.s.) says:
"Islam is based on five principles - Namaz, Zakat, Fasting, Haj and the Mastership (of Ahle Bait (a.s.)) and the manner in which importance has been given to Mastership no other thing has been given such importance."
(al-Kaafi, vol.2, pg.18)
While explaining the following Quranic verse, Imam Mohammad Baqir (a.s.) says:
"Then believe in Allah and His Messenger and the light which We have sent down",
"By Allah in the above verse, 'light' refers to the Imams from the progeny of Mohammad (s.a.w.a.) till the day of Judgement and by Allah these are the 'lights' which Allah has sent. And by Allah, they are the 'lights' in the heavens and on the earth... By Allah the 'light' of Imam in the hearts of the believers, is brighter than the shining sun."
(Tafseer Noor al-Saqalain, vol. 5, pg. 321)
When people disregarded this great bounty, Allah, the High concealed Imam-e-Zaman (a.s.) from their eyes. No other calamity can be greater than this concealment of Imam (a.s.) from the sights of the people. The simile of the above is like a child who is left alone in darkness to seek out his way, he is not aware of its beginning nor its end. Resultantly, he will fall a prey for the beast or will become needy of somebody.
Imam Mohammad Baqir (a.s.) says:
"When Allah, the Blessed and the High is angry with His creation then He makes us - the Ahle bait (a.s.), distanced and away from the people."
(al-Kaafi, Chapter of Occultation, Tradition No. 31)
The presence of Imam (a.s.) among the people to solve their questions and problems is a divine grace of immeasurable magnitude. The concealment of Imam (a.s.) from the sights of the people and their helplessness to reach the Imam (a.s.) is the justice of Allah. Grace takes precedence over justice but the disobedience and ungratefulness of the Muslims has replaced the grace of Allah with His justice.
It is an irrefutable reality that the benefits that we would have enjoyed in the physical presence of Imam (a.s.), are not available now. It is a great loss and nothing can make the loss good. We only are to be blamed for the loss and nobody else.
One question arises here: The cause of occultation was due to the disobedience and ingratitude of the earlier Muslims. Then why are we suffering for their action and misdeeds? Is it not injustice?
Answer: Firstly, as we have already mentioned that if Allah has kept His Proof among the people, then it is His grace. And if He conceals Him, then it is His justice.
Secondly, we are also responsible for the occultation of Imam-e-Asr (a.s.) by our conflicts, internal fighting, sins, misdemeanors, etc. These actions are the cause of prolonging the occultation of Imam (a.s.). Imam-e-Zaman (a.s.), in one of his 'Tawqee' to Sheikh Mufeed (a.r.) writes: "If the hearts of our Shias (may Allah give them the taufeeq of His obedience) were united in their fulfillment of the covenant (of Shiasm), then certainly our meeting with them would have not been delayed".
The words of Imam (a.s.) show that our disunity not only makes him sorrowful but is also a cause of prolongation of his occultation and loneliness. In other words, our actions and sins are the cause of sorrow and grief for our Imam (a.s.). If we sincerely love our Imam (a.s.) then let all of us take this oath that we will not commit sins and disobey Allah the Almighty, as these sins deprive us of our Imam and consequently, we lose the greatest bounty of Allah, the High. On the flip side, if we keep our covenant and refrain from sins, we can undo the misdeeds of the earlier Muslims and can obtain the privilege of an earlier meeting with our Imam (a.s.).

The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.): There will be twelve Imams after me, nine of them are the grandsons of Imam Husayn (A.S.) and the ninth is the Qa'im. So blessed are those who would love them and woe to those who would be hostile to them.
The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.): If a person worships Allah for a thousand years between "Safa" and "Marva" (Two holy places in Makkah adjoined to Masjid al-Haram) and continues his worship for many more thousand years, but does not love us, Allah will cast him in the Hell-Fire. Then His Holiness(S.A.W.) recited this verse: "Say (O Muhammad) "I do not ask of you any recompense for (the toil of the prophetship) save love of (my) relatives" (42:23).
The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.): Only the illegitimate ones would feel enmity toward us.
The Effects of the Enmity Towards Ahl al-Bayt (A.S.)
Allah's Displeasure
The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.): The night when I was ascended (Miraj), I saw that it was written on the gate of the Paradise: "There is none to be worshipped but Allah, Muhammad (S.A.W.) is His Messenger, 'Ali(A.S.) is his friend, al-Hasan(A.S.) and al-Husayn (A.S.) are chosen by Allah, and Fatima(A.S.) is His chosen one. May Allah's curse befall upon those who are their enemies.
The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.): Know that whoever harbors the enmity of Muhammad's (S.A.W.) progeny, they will be raised on the Resurrection Day with this phrase written on his forehead: "Deprived of Allah's Mercy.
Imam Ali (A.S.): for those who harbor enmity toward us there shall be the onslaught of Allah wrath and dissatisfaction.
Entering the Group of Hypocrites
The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.): Whoever harbors enmity to Ahl al-Bayt is a hypocrite.
The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.): Be aware that if a man among my "Ummah" worships Allah, the Supreme and the High, all his life long but meets Allah, while feeling enmity and hatred towards my Ahl-Bayt and my followers, Allah Will disclose his hypocrisy. [Which means when his hidden nature is exposed by Allah, then people will come to know that he was a hypocrite.]
Abu Sa'id khudri: We the group of Ansar knew the hypocrites by the hatred they felt toward Ali ibn Abi Talib (A.S.).
Joining the Group of the Unbelievers
The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.): There are three things which alienate any person from me: Harboring the enmity of Ali ibn Abi Talib(A.S.), bearing grudge against Ahl-al-Bayt(A.S.) and whoever says that believing is limited to only what one pronounces.
Joining to the Group of Jews and Christians
Jabir ibn 'Abd Allah quotes the Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.): O people! Whoever bears any grudge toward the Ahl-al-Bayt (A.S.),shall be mustered with the Jews on the Resurrection Day. I asked: Even if he performs daily prayers and fasts? He replied: Yes, even if he fasts, performs the daily prayers and regards himself as a Muslim.
Imam al-Baqir (A.S.): A man came to the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Is anyone who professes "there is no god but Allah" a believer? He replied: Harboring enmity against us causes a person to be included among the Christians and the Jews. You shall not go to Paradise unless you love me. And whoever thinks that he loves me and at the same time feels enmity toward Ali (A.S.) is a liar.
Deprived of Seeing the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) on the Day of Judgment
The Messenger of Allah ( S.A.W.): Whoever is the enemy of my Ahl al-Bayt(A.S.) will not see me on the Day of Judgment. I will not see him either.
Appearing with Severed Hands on the Day of Judgment
The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.): The one who harbors enmity toward us indeed Allah will raise him with severed hands on Doomsday.
Deprived of the Intercession
Anas ibn Malik: I saw the Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.) walking toward Ali ibn Abi Talib's (A.S.) house reciting this verse: "And (during a part) of the night, forsake sleep for prayer, in addition to (obligatory prayers): maybe your Lord will exalt you to a praised position" (17:79). Then he said: O 'Ali! My Lord, the Supreme and the High has given me the right to intercede for my ummah, but this intercession was forbidden for those who are your enemies and harbor enmity against your sons.
To Become a Dweller in the Hell
The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.): I swear to the One who holds my soul in His hand, all those who are enemies of Ahl al-Bayt shall be thrown into the [Hell] Fire.
The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.): O sons of 'Abdul Muttalib! I have requested three things from Allah for you: That He may give you perseverance, may lead those who go astray and bestow knowledge on those who are ignorant. I also requested from Allah to make you generous, brave and kind. So if a man among you stands upright at the station of Ibrahim and "Rukn" and performs daily prayers and fasts, but meets Allah while feeling anger and hatred toward Muhammad's(S.A.W.) Ahl al-Bayt, shall enter the Hell.
Imam al-Sadiq (A.S.): Whoever becomes happy to know that Allah loves him, should follow us and obey Allah. Has he not heard the saying of Allah, the Glorious and the High that: "Say (O Muhammad (S.A.W.): If you love Allah, then follow me; Allah will love you and forgive your sins" (3:31)? I swear by Allah! All Servants who obey Allah, should follow us too. I swear by Allah that all those who follow us would be loved by Allah, I swear by Allah that all servants who refrain from following us, would become our enemies. I swear by Allah that whoever becomes our enemy is disobeying Allah and whoever dies while disobeying Allah, would be degraded and thrown into the Hell-Fire. Glory and praise be upon Allah who is the Sustainer of the worlds.
Imam al-Kazim (A.S.): Whoever is our enemy is the enemy of Muhammad (S,A.W.), and whoever is his enemy has harbored enmity against Allah and whoever is the enemy of Allah the Glorious and the High, deserves to be cast into the Fire. Thus no one would help him.

Minor (ghaibat sughra) period lasted 69 years
Names of 4 representatives in this period:-

4.Abu Hassan bin Mohammed Sumayri
There is a letter by our Imam informing us that his representatives will be the scholars (Alims - Marajas) henceforth.

If Allah (swt) can make someone alive after death, why can’t HE keep someone alive for a long period?
Many prophets /people have had v long lives: Adam, Noah, Khizr, Ilyas, Isa (as)
Zulqarnain had a life of 3000 years
Satan(shaitan) himself has a long life!
There are proofs of the Imam’s birth but no tradition on his death.

His example is like the sun behind the clouds, which though hidden still provides warmth & light
He is only hidden from our ordinary vision
Our deeds (a’amal) are taken to him regularly & he is sad or happy depending on what we do everyday
He attends gatherings especially Haj
Many , many incidents of meeting, sighting & help have been recorded
Know Your Imam - Reappearance Signs
There will be discord & cruelty & injustice widespread
Sufyani will appear
Dajjal will appear
Killing of Nafs e Zakkiyah
There will be a heavenly cry
It will be on Friday at the Ka’aba
Know Your Imam - Waiting….
We need to be in waiting (Intezar) for his reappearance…
Our actions & behaviour should reflect we are in waiting for such a personality
We should give up deeds which displease Allah (swt) & do what Islam demands from us.
There is NO FIXED TIME for his re-appearance, it is unknown. You can make the difference if you call from the heart and be like he wants his followers to become.
Know Your Imam - Calling….
He answers call from All Momineen and Helps them when called.
He meets people who call him with the right Neeyat
He is the Imam of our time and in the time of need and difficulty we should call upon him for help and solutions.
There are many recorded events since his occultation where he has helped Momineen in person.
“ARIZA” is one way of communicating with him throughout the year.
