OCCULTATION OF IMAM AN IMMENSE DEPRIVATION:
Allah, the Blessed, the High says in the Holy Quran:
"The day when We will call every people with their Imam"
(Bani Israel: 71)
Allah, the High at various places, has promised guidance to the people. To fulfill His promise. He sent Prophets and Messengers (peace be on them all) one after another, who called people towards His religion, recognition and worship. When the Prophethood was completed with the advent of the last prophet Mohammad (s.a.w.s.). He introduced Imamat in the progeny of Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) so that people may turn to them and save themselves from straying and attain eternal happiness. The greatest and the highest bounty of Allah from amongst His bounties is the presence of Imam (a.s.).
No other bounty can match this bounty. Other bounties have reached their relative position due to this bounty, without which all other endowments are imperfect. As it is mentioned in the Holy Quran,
"This day (on the day of Ghadeer) I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor on you and chosen for you Islam as a religion."
(Maaedah: 3)
"And as for the favor of your Lord, do announce (it)."
Our guidance and salvation depends upon the fourteen infallibles therefore, it is obligatory upon us that we discuss and talk about this bounty.
We would like to make an important point over here. And that is, a believer should never give preference to any bounty over that of the mastership and love of Ahle Bait (a.s.). To consider the gift of 'Mastership of Ahle Bait (a.s.)' as light or equating it with other endowments like wealth, children, business etc. will lead to our destruction and devastation.
The Islamic nations received the distinction of living with the thirteen infallibles and reap benefits from their holy lives. However, the majority breached their covenant with their Lord and the people who actually remained loyal and faithful, could easily be counted on fingers.
Instead of deriving benefits from their existence, the people oppressed and tortured them no end. Their barbarism and brutality had reached to such pits that had they been told to oppress the family of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.), they would have not been able to repress than what they actually did. Notwithstanding such-a disgraceful demonstration of ingratitude and inhumanity, the Merciful Allah did not snatch away the bounty of the physical presence of the infallibles (a.s.) from amongst the people, till the commencement of the occultation of Imam Mahdi (a.s.).
It should be borne in mind that if Allah bestows bounty on any one without he deserving it, then this bounty of Allah is His 'Grace'. If He snatches the bounty after sometime, it is not injustice because he had bestowed it without the person deserving it.
On the contrary, it will be sheer justice. It is not obligatory on Allah that He should always deal with 'Grace'. But on occasions, He deals with His grace and on others, with justice. None of His dealings are devoid of wisdom. It is not necessary that we should . know the prudence behind all His actions. Whatever He does is sheer wisdom, whether we comprehend or not. We can comprehend the wisdom behind any of His action only in the light of the Holy Quran and the traditions. The intellect of men cannot comprehend the rationale behind His actions.
However, from the divine practices of Allah is the practice which has been related in Holy Quran and the traditions is:
"Surely Allah does not change the condition of people until they change their own condition..."
"This is because Allah has never changed a favor which He has conferred upon the people until they change their own condition..."
(Anfaal; 53)
Imam Mohammad Baqir (a.s.) in the exposition of the above Quranic verses says:
It is a definite and certain decree of Allah that when He bestows a bounty on His servant. He does not snatch it till the servant commits a sin which becomes the cause of its deprivation. This is the meaning of Allah's word "Surely Allah does not change the condition of people until they change their own condition".
(Tafseer Noor al-Saqalain, vol.2, p. 488)
In brief, the actions of the people are the cause of Allah, the High, confiscating the bounty from them. Ameerul Momineen Ali Ibn Abi Taalib (a.s.) in the opening sentences of his famous supplication, Dua-e-Kumayl,says:
"0 Allah! Forgive those of my sins which convert the bounties (into calamities)."
The Divine practice shows that Allah's Mercy takes precedence over His Wrath. Therefore, Allah seizes the bounty only when people are ungrateful and unappreciative.
Thus, we are not aware of the actual wisdom behind the occultation of Imam-e-Asr (a.t.f.s.) and according to some traditions. Imam Zaman (a.t.f.s.) will himself give the reason of his occultation when he reappears. However, one of the reasons that we are familiar with is that occultation is due to the anger of Allah on account of the ingratitude of the people. The physical presence of Imam (a.s.) among the people was the greatest bounty of Allah upon the people that was snatched from them. While explaining the importance of the physical presence of Imam (a.s.). Imam Reza (a.s.) says:
"Imamat is complete religion, the foundation of Islam, the basis of all goodness, the discipline of the nation, the path to Allah and the light through which people acquire guidance."
Imam Mohammad Baqi'r (a.s.) says:
"Islam is based on five principles -Namaz, Zakat, Fasting, Ha] and the Mastership (ofAhle Bait (a.s.)) and the manner in which importance has been given to Mastership no other thing has been given such importance."
(al-Kaafi, vol.2, p.l8)
While explaining the following Quranic verse. Imam Mohammad Baqir (a.s.) says:
"Then believe in Allah and His Messenger and the light which We have sent down",
"By Allah in the above verse, 'light' refers to the Imams from the progeny of Mohammad (s.a.w.s.) till the day of Judgment and by Allah these are the 'lights' which Allah has sent. And by Allah, they are the 'lights' in the heavens and on the earth... By Allah the 'light' of Imam in the hearts of the believers, is brighter than the shining sun."
(Tafseer Noor al-Saqalain, vol. 5, p. 321)
When people disregarded this great bounty, Allah, the High concealed Imam-e-Zaman (a.s.) from their eyes. No other calamity can be greater than this concealment of Imam (a.s.) from the sights of the people. The simile of the above is like a child who is left alone in darkness to seek out his way, he is not aware of its beginning nor its end. Resultantly, he will fall a prey for the beast or will become needy of somebody.
Imam Muhammad Baqir (a.s.) says:
"When Allah, the Blessed and the High is angry with His creation then He makes us -the Ahle bait (a.s.), distanced and away from
the people."
(al-Kaafi, Chapter of Occultation, Tradition No. 31)
The presence of Imam (a.s.) among the people to solve their questions and problems is a divine grace of immeasurable magnitude. The concealment of Imam (a.s.) from the sights of the people and their helplessness to reach the Imam (a.s.) is the justice of Allah. Grace takes precedence over justice but the disobedience and ungratefulness of the Muslims has replaced the grace of Allah with His justice.
It is an irrefutable reality that the benefits that we would have enjoyed in the physical presence of Imam (a.s.), are not available now. It is a great loss and nothing can make the loss 'good. We only are to be blamed for the loss and nobody else.
One question arises here: The cause of occultation was due to the disobedience and ingratitude of the earlier Muslims. Then why are we suffering for their action and misdeeds? Is it not injustice?
Answer: Firstly, as we have already mentioned that if Allah has kept His Proof among the people, then it is His grace. And if He conceals Him, then it is His justice.
Secondly, we are also responsible for the occultation of Imam-e-Asr (a.s.) by our conflicts, internal fighting, sins, misdemeanours, etc. These actions are the cause of prolonging the occultation of Imam (a.s.). Imam-e-Zaman (a.s.), in one of his 'Tawqee' to Sheikh Mufeed (a.r.) writes: "If the hearts of our Shias (may Allah give them the taufeeq of His obedience) were united in their fulfillment of the covenant (of Shiasm), then certainly our meeting with them would have not been delayed".
The words of Imam (a.s.) show that our disunity not only makes him sorrowful but is also a cause of prolongation of his occupation and loneliness. In other words, our actions and sins are the cause of sorrow and grief for our Imam (a.s.). If we sincerely love our Imam (a.s.) then let all of us take this oath that we will not commit sins and disobey Allah the Almighty, as these sins deprive us of our Imam and consequently, we lose the greatest bounty of Allah, the High. On the flip side, if we keep our covenant and refrain from sins, we can undo the misdeeds of the earlier Muslims and can obtain the privilege of an earlier meeting with our Imam (a.s.).
WHY OCCULTATION ?
The Almighty Allah has bestowed the human beings with a superiority and has kept the rest of the creation under him. He says,'I have created man with the best parts. Whether it is the earth or atmosphere, sea or the mountain, forest or the desert, man not only has superiority upon all these but they are subservient to his commands and power. But Allah has also said that when I turned around this man, I found him to be the worst of the creation.
To show the superiority and specialty of man he has been given the freedom of will and with it, complete guidance. In this way the path for him was laid out that he may not misuse his freedom and be led astray by the instigation of the Satan. By giving him intellect and reasoning he was made capable of discerning the good and the bad. And the chain of 1,24,000 Prophets was initiated so that they may show man a way of life to remain away from the evils so that he may remain safe from his enemies and be forewarned of their designs. And that the worldly fallacies do not hinder the progress of his spiritual self. Among those prophets some possessed medium age and some were given a long life. Some were recalled (died) at a young age.
There are even some who were first made apparent to the people then the curtain of occultation was put upon them. There were some prophets who were apparent for some few selected righteous people but were hidden from the common masses like Hazrat Khizr (AS.), Hazrat Idris (AS.) etc. Allah is the Ultimate Power. He is the Knower of the Unseen worlds. He Himself is aware of the calls of His justice. He is the one who made man His lowly creation aware of His Lordship and made him submit to His mastership and described him with His Own qualities. When the chain of the Prophets came to an end by the coming of the seal of the Prophets, the greatest among the messengers, Mohammad al Mustafa (S.A.W.) then His morals, His commandments and His book were protected by his successors.
The chain of successors shall remain till the end of the world. This is guaranteed by Allah Himself. Since the vicegerent is appointed by Allah therefore the divine in the persons who were to hold the post of Imamat. History is a witness that while some Prophets were given a long life, others lived for a shorter duration. There were some who were apparent and some hidden from the eyes of the people, and still are concealed today. If the number of hidden Prophets from the 1,24,000 Prophets is few then the number of hidden Imams is also very less. Out of the twelve Imams, Eleven were openly carrying out their duties of protecting the commandments of Allah. Only one of the Imams has been concealed. The Holy Prophet (SAW.) has prophesied that eleven of the twelve Imams will protect religion in their own time amidst turbulent environs and murderous surroundings. And by the quality of their personality they constructed the minarets of light which will illuminate the truth in the dark periods of history till the end of the world. Even among the Imams the different spans of life and duration of Imamat is to be found. Just like it was in the case of Prophets. The age of Imam Hasan al Askari (AS.) was only 28 years. His period of Imamat was for six years from 254 A.H. to 260 A.H. After him the Imamat of his exalted son began who was born in 255 A.H. And he is the last Imam.
His age was only five years then. And his long life is known only to Allah. When he will reappear he will fill the earth with justice and equity like it had been filled with injustice and oppression. Although even today he is the supreme ruler and we all live in the limits of his domain. The gates of these apparent and concealed rule are ghaibat (occultation) and Zuhoor (reappearance).
One thing is astonishing here, that the intellectuals are washed away in the torrents of thoughts. The human voice in them speaks out. Each and every person of this group knows that faultless people are being oppressed. They are dealt with cruelty. They are helpless and their pain and restlessness is apparent. Their plundered homes, the burning embers of hunger in their bellies, the whiteness spread on their eyes. The wretched children clinging to their mothers. Empty bowls in their hands, searching for their destination, where there is justice, there is equity. Where their talents are nurtured, where their voices are heard by someone, where there is a cool shade of peace.
From the cracks of the walls of all religions emerge these calls. And the progress of the caravan of the human beings continues towards its destination. The pathways of which are manifest, but the end of the journey not in sight. If this had not been the case then these efforts and these preparations all would have subsided. And no hope would have remained (the spirit of hope is one reason of occultation). It is a strange logic indeed. The three factors which are hidden are believed in viz. ·
The human species especially the support of the oppressed ·
The hope of the ultimate destination. ·
The image of the liberator.
But on reaching this point the belief is shaken down, where the question of the liberator arises. The so-called intellectuals insist that such a personality does not exist at all. It is only in Islam that this religion gives all the details of such a personality and also indicates the time and spatial dimensions of his existence. And he is recognised in a way like the sun is seen behind the clouds. The Muslim scholars in general and the Shia scholars in, particular have researched into the authenticity of this fact, from the historical as well as the traditional point of view and then believed in it.
And this belief is based on such a firm foundation that no one can forgo it. The fact is that the light of his holy self (Hazrat Mahdi) filters through the curtain of the divinely ordained occultation, illuminates the creation and imparts life to it. Here one question acquires paramount importance and is also raised with great prejudice and that is, who is the representative of Allah and the saviour of the downtrodden and oppressed people ? If he exists then why is he not seen by everyone, why is he in occultation, why is the occultation so prolonged that it seems impossible, what are the reasons of all these?
First of all, we have already stated in the introduction that whatever was made necessary for the Prophets (AS.) the same things are also for the successors of the Prophets. History is replete with examples where the moment a Prophet raised his voice for propagation, all the unbelievers took up cudgels with him and conspiring with the tyrant rulers tried all means to put hurdles in his way. But the Prophets never gave up their mission. They kept on striving. They never wavered in their steps nor were they haunted by any doubts. Their firmness of purpose never decreased. There is no instance in history where these Prophets have been subdued by the power of the rulers or the opposition of the people. However if the adversities intensified, the Prophet either prayed for divine punishment, or bore the difficulties patiently till death, or were hidden from their people by Allah.
The event of Hazrat Musa (A.S.) leaving Egypt has been recorded in the Quran. Hazrat Isa (A.S.) was raised to the fourth sky. Hazrat Khizr and Hazrat Ilyas (A.S.) are present in this world itself but are not been by everyone since ages.
If we study the history of Imam Mahdi (A.T.F.S.) and the background of his occultation, we shall find that its historical causes were the same as that of the various Prophets.
Samarra became the seat of power for Bani Abbas in 220 A.H. In 234 A.H. the Abbaside Caliph Mutawakkil sent Yahya bin Harsma to summon Imam Ali Naqi (AS.) to Samarrah Imam Hasan Askari (AS.) was also with him [(Imam Ali Naqi A.S.)]. He was only two years old. In 247 A.H. Mutawakkil was murdered while intoxicated. During these fourteen years, Imam Hasan Askari (AS.) faced great difficulties alongwith his father, There were restrictions on visiting the tomb of Imam Husain (A.S.). The signs of the grave were obliterated. Imam Hasan Askari and Imam Ali Naqi (A.S.) were in house arrest and were heavily guarded. Sometimes, Mutawakkil imprisoned them and at other times summoned them to his court. Sometimes he called them while he sat enjoying wine in their presence. And on their refusal to accept his offer of the intoxicants he cried in ecstasy.
Spies surrounded them. After the murder of Mutawakkil, Muntasir and later Mustaeen became the Caliphs. Mustaeen shifted the seat of his government to Baghdad. Later, he entered into allegiance with Motazbillah and Samarra again became the centre of Caliphate. A reign of terror was unleashed in the town of Basra. There were revolts in Khurasan and Ahwaz which were immediately suppressed. No hilace was safe for the common people Imam Hadi (AS.) was martyred in the year 254 A.H. The duration of the Imamate of Imam Hasan Askari (AS.) was from 254 A.H. to 260 A.H. Walie-Asr and the Promised Mahdi was born in the year 255 All His age was only 5 years when Imam Hasan Al Askari (AS.) left this world.
Imam Hasan AI-Askari (A S) was poisoned at the order of Motamid in 260 A.H. and his duration of Imamate came to an end after six years. During this time the activities of the spies had intensified to such an extent that midwives used to enter the Imams house forcibly and examine if any of his wives were pregnant. But like Allah had concealed Hazrat Musa (AS.) in the womb of his mother, Janabe Narjis showed no outward signs of pregnancy.
The spies were spread from the residence of the Imam upto the prison. Once Imam Hasan Askari (AS.) was in the prison of Saleh bin Vaseef (a Turk). Imprisoned in this place from before were some of his trusted companions Abu Hashim Jafri, Dawood bin Qasim, Hasan bin Mohammad Aqiqi and Mohammad bin Ibrahim Amri. A person by the name of Jami was also there. Imam warned his companions to beware of this man because he was a spy. On inquiry it was found that he kept a record of the daily happenings there. Thus spies were there in every disguise. Hazrat Askari (AS.) fell ill on the 1st of Rabiul Awwal. During these eight days the Caliph had posted a battalion of guards who kept strict surveillance on the visitors. Why did the Abbaside Caliph behave in such a manner towards the son of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.)? A tradition from the Holy Prophet (SAW.) says that whatever has happened in the Ummat of Musa (AS.) will occur in My Ummat. Like Firon knew that Hazrat Musa (AS.) will rise to put an end to his claim of divinity, in the same way the Caliph was time and again reminded by the narrators of hadith that the 12th successor of the Holy Prophet (SAW.) is to come and purify this earth from all injustice and oppression.
The prophecy of Holy Prophet (SAW.) has to materialise one day. The caliphs felt the imminent danger to themselves and took all the possible precautions.
When such a terror was spread everywhere the birth of Imam Mahdi (AS.) occurred in 255 A.H. [Like the concealed birth of Hazrat Musa (ASH. One of the divine duties of Imam Hasan Askari (AS.) was the protection of Hazrat Hujjat (A.T.F.S.) from the enemies. At the same time he had to inform his trusted followers that the Promised Mahdi has been born so that they could follow him in future even though he would remain concealed from them.
The conditions which had prevailed at the occultation of the Prophets were also present here. The reign of terror among the people, the strict surveillance of the ruler, the net of spies, discord in every area, the rising of the Imam at the centre of Caliphate, the movement of the armies, the oppressions upon the lovers of the household of the Holy Prophet (SAW.), The guards upon the residence of Imam (AS.). Like in the case of Prophet Musa (AS.) the divine command arrived for Hazrat Hujjat to go into occultation in order to protect his life.
Occultation a divine plan
If we study the aspects of the occultation and reflect upon it, we can easily understand it as a divine plan. After this the reappearance of the Imam shall be the last part of this divine plan. It is mentioned in a tradition
There is no miracle of the Prophet which Allah will not manifest through Our Oaem so that the proof will be complete for the enemies and they have no avenue for excuses. (Muntakhabul Athar, page 313)
As time progressed and the numerous human schools of thoughts came into existence, the nefarious plans of the unjust authorities also evolved. After the Holy Prophet (SAW.), a time came when during the occultation, different types of conspiracies were hatched. Different types of wrong beliefs led astray the gullible public away from the right path. Instead of the true guides there was now an excess of the false ones-the Kaisaniyas, the Kazemiya, Ismailiya, Wahabism, Bahaism and Oadianism the list of the false movements seems endless. After suppressing the constructive missions the unjust and tyrannical instances began to fill the pages of history. Even after 12 centuries, all these are still rampant.
In the end the saviour will arrive to put an end to all this. The rule of Allah will stretch from the east to the west. No one would be qualified to oppose him and neither would anyone have any complaints.
Divine promise
The divine promise throws light upon the reasons of the occultation which is an inseparable part of the plan. There is always an interval of time between a promise and its fulfillment. These are a few examples of the divine promises in the miraculous book (the Quran): ·
In Surah Nur Verse: 55
Allah has promised to those of you who believe and do good that He will most certainly make them rulers in the earth... ·
In Surah Ambiya Verse:105
And certainly We wrote in the book after the reminder that (as for) the land, My righteous servants shall inherit it. ·
In Surah Aale Imran Verse: 200
0 those who believe remain steadfast, have patience, maintain cooperation and fear Allah. Perhaps you be successful. ·
When the earth dies Allah again rejeunates it by His power.
From the aforementioned verses, we conclude that Allah will make His representative and successor inherit the earth and bestow upon him a just and equitable Kingdom. He will revive the earth after its death and in the rule of this government there would be no difference between the strong and the weak. And those who have power will not be able to exploit the downtrodden people.
The promise of Allah is true. It would be surely fulfilled. But the various factors of the reappearance are being accomplished, which are going to be instrumental in the establishment of the divine government. Allah has bestowed a prolonged occultation to His Last Proof (Hujjat) so that the belief of the believers could be put to a test and all the opponents can try all their designs.
It is a naked truth that the floods of injustice and oppression is increasingly engulfing the whole world. But the seas of injustice and oppression has not yet developed the power enough to break the boundaries and surround the earth. Or we can say that the caravans of utter darkness, along with their blackness, have yet to descend upon the earth. And only when the wrongdoers would have completed their oppressions to the utmost, that the secret aim of occultation would be revealed.
What would have happened if there had been no occultation ? The reply is simple. Hazrat Wali Asr (A.S.) would have become manifest and just like the previous Imams he also would have been martyred. The light of Allah was in the form of human creation and the evil ones were on its look-out. The result would have been that even the last proof of the Prophets and the Imams would not have remained on the earth. The result would have been either of the two. One, the earth would have perished. Or, the future generations would have complained that the argument of Allah has not been completed. Hence, the Almighty Allah has kept His proof in occultation so that on one hand the continuity of the world is maintained and on the other hand all the corrupt and evil people have an open field so that there is no scope for the complaint that the proof of Allah is not complete. At the time of the reappearance they will not have any arguments. And the propriety of divine justice shall be maintained.
Another reason for occultation as stated in the traditions of AhleBayt is if Imam-e-Zamaan (A.T.F.S.) had been manifested, then he would have had to live under pressure of some unjust ruler like his predecessors. The agents of the ruler would keep him constantly under surveillance. The open enforcement of the shariat was almost impossible. Thus Allah has appointed such a time for his reappearance where there does not remain any power to obstruct the Imam in his mission. He would have collected the necessary strength to subdue all opposition and every corner of the world would be clear of the evil elements. Imam Jafar Sadiq (A.S.) Says in one of his utterances:
The master of this divine government has a concealed birth so that when he is to reappear he will not have any pressure from any oppressor. (Muntakhabul Athar, page 288)
As far as the necessary preparations of this government are concerned Allah will create the favourable conditions overnight. For it is actually the government of Allah. Hazrat Mahdi (A.T.F.S.) Is only the representative of Allah in this regard.
One of the reasons that is evident from the traditions of AbleBayt is that the occultation is to be prolonged till all the practices of the prophets and their methods are accomplished in Hazrat Mahdi (A.T.F.S.). Sudair asked Imam Sadiq (A.S.) '0 son of the Prophet why it is like that (the occultation is prolonged) ?" Imam replied, "Allah will not order the reappearance till all the practices of the Prophets, which the prophets had during their occultations are not acted upon fully. 0 Sudair it is obligatory for him (Qaem) to fulfill all these things.
Allah says:
That you shall most certainly enter one state after another. (Inshiqaq: 19). (Behaarul Anwaar vol.52 page 90)
That means all those practices were before you when will all this be accomplished is known to none except Allah. That is why to predict the time of reappearance is prohibited.
Some other reasons of the occultation are deduced from the traditions of AbleBayt. But to go into the details and the depths of these and to say anything for sure would be nothing but to deceive ourselves. The actual causes of the occultation and the wisdom behind it is known only to the Creator and those divine personalities who have been bestowed with divine knowledge. The infallibles (A.S.) have been ordered not to explain these divine secrets.
This could be explained by the example of the incident of Hazrat Musa and Hazrat Khizr (A 5) When H Khizr made the hole in the boat, killed the boy and repaired the wall he did not inform of his main intention behind his actions, till it was time for Musa to separate from him. At the time of departing he told H. Musa the actual reasons. This concept could be explained in the light of the tradition related from Imam Sadiq (A.S.) by Al-Fazl Hashmi which is as follows:
'The occultation of the master of this affair is a must, during which the sinful people will be involved in doubts."
I asked Imam, "May my life be sacrificed for you, why is it?
He said:"Even we have not been permitted the exposition of this affair." I inquired, "What is the wisdom behind the occultation ?" He said, "The wisdom behind this occultation is the same that was for the occultation of the previous prophets. The actual reason will be revealed only after the reappearance. Like Hazrat Khizr did not explain the reason for making a hole in the boat and killing the boy and repairing the wall till it was time for Musa (AS.) and him to separate
0 Son of Fazl, this affair is one of the affairs of Allah. And its secret reason is one of the secrets the knowledge of which is exclusive to Allah only. When we have expressed the belief in the wisdom of Allah we have to agree that whatever he says or does is also having wisdom. Even though the actual reasons and the cause may not be evident upon us." (Behaarui Anwaar vol.52 page 91)
As far as the obvious reasons of occultation as given in the traditions are concerned one is that during the occultation the belief in Imam (AS.) and his obedience is put to test. In a lengthy tradition Imam Jafar as Sadiq (AS.) tells about the signs of reappearance and concludes thus:
And these signs will appear after a long occultation so that Allah could test as to who believes in him and obeys him during it (the Ghaibat). (Muntakhabul Athar Chap.35hadith:1)
Another reason of occultation is also our bad deeds and the atmosphere of irreligiousness. Our society is satisfied upon the prevailing un-Islamic conditions and considers them to be truly Islamic. Then where is the scope for any prophet or Imam in such a society. It would not be inappropriate to compare this with the situation of Kufa. Ali (AS.) was calling the people to Jihad against Moawiya and the people were exhibiting their cowardice by making excuses of the summer and winter seasons and looking for a favourable season. The result of this was that the Master of the most pious had to accept the cup of Martyrdom. The same is the condition of our society which, Imam Baqir (A.S.) states in his tradition. Marwan Anbari says that a letter from Imam Baqir (AS.) arrived where Imam had written:
"When Allah disliked the company of the people for us he removed us away from them." (Behaarul An waar vol.52 page 90).
Finally, it is to be mentioned that Imam-e-Zaman himself does not like, that the people should insist upon knowing the reasons for occultation because it is one of the divine secrets. According to Imam-e-Zaman (A.T.F.S.).
Allah the High and Mighty does not wish that we question about the (causes of) Ghaibat because it would be detrimental for us. If we know of the reason we would be aggrieved. One tradition in this connection is presented thus: Imam Mahdi (A.T.F.S.)
In a 'tawqee (epistle) through his second special deputy, Mohammad bin Usman says: "As far as the cause of occultation is concerned Allah, the Almighty says,
0 you who believe! do not put questions about things which if declared to you may trouble you... (Behaarul Anwaar vol.52 page 92)
It is clear from the above tradition that we should not indulge conjectures about the causes of occultation. However, we should accept as truth all that is informed to us by the infallible Imams and we should be satisfied with it. Only Allah is aware of the divine affairs. Hence we should consider this occultation as a bounty and a respite which is given to us, so that we can perform good deeds and correct our mistakes. Then, when the reappearance of Imam is ordered by Allah our love for the Imam would benefit us. If the reappearance occurs during our lifetime we would then be given the honour to be among the helpers of Imam (A.T.F.S.) in his mission against the enemies of Islam. We could accompany the Imam (A.S.) when he avenges the death of the martyrs of Karbala, for whom we mourn and shed tears, year after year.
Let us then resolve that we shall pray night and day for the reappearance of Imam Mahdi (A.S.). We shall do everything which takes us nearer to the Imam (A.S.). And avoid all such acts which would take us away from our Master Imam Mahdi (AS.). So if we ponder upon this we would realise that there is no one who cares for us except this benevolent Imam. We should not dissatisfy him with our deeds. Because if our Imam (AS.) turns away from us (disregards us) then we shall have no shelter.

Hidungnya Mancung
Dari Abu Said al-Khudri RA berkata, Rasulullah SAW bersabda,
“al-Mahdi adalah dari keturunanku, dahinya luas, hidungnya mancung. Dia akan memenuhkan bumi ini dengan keadilan dan kesaksamaan sebagaimana sebelumnya dipenuhi dengan kezaliman dan penindasan. Dia memerintah selama tujuh tahun.” (Abu Daud & al-Hakim)
Berdasarkan hadis ini, dinyatakan lagi beberapa perkara, sama ada pertama kali disebut, mahupun yang berupa pengulangan daripada hadis-hadis lain:
1.Imam Mahdi adalah dari keturunan Baginda SAW. Pengesahan yang dibuat berulang-ulang kali ini tidak syak lagi adalah janji Allah dan Rasul-Nya SAW bahawa memang Imam Mahdi itu adalah benar-benar dari keturunan Nabi SAW. Kerana terlalu banyak pengulangan terhadap perkara yang sama, maka dapatlah disimpulkan di sini bahawa perkara ini adalah sesuatu yang mesti dipenuhi, tidak boleh tidak.
2.Dahinya luas. Penyataan ini juga diulang dalam beberapa buah hadis dan ucapan sahabat dan tabiin. Orang yang berdahi luas lazim dikatakan adalah tanda orangnya kuat rohaniahnya, ahli pemikir yang kuat, tenang fikirannya dan matang dalam segala tindakan dan urusan. Dahi luas juga adalah tanda orang itu sudah berumur, bukan remaja lagi. Sebab itu, lazimnya golongan remaja mempunyai saiz dahi yang lebih kecil berbanding orang dewasa dan orang-orang tua.
3.Hidung Imam Mahdi adalah mancung. Pernyataan ini adalah tanda bahawa Imam Mahdi itu lahir dari kalangan orang atau kaum yang hidungnya ‘tidak mancung’. Jika tidak, masakan perkara ini perlu disebut oleh Nabi SAW, kerana bangsa Arab memang diketahui umum memiliki hidung yang mancung-mancung belaka. Terlalu jarang atau boleh dianggap pelik jika dikatakan ada orang Arab yang hidungnya tidak mancung atau pesek. Maksud tersiratnya, Imam Mahdi itu benar-benar lahir di negara Ajam.
4.Imam Mahdi akan menjadi pemerintah di bumi ini. Pemerintahannya setelah menjadi Khalifah adalah penuh adil dan saksama, meliputi seluruh dunia. Tanda akan naik Imam Mahdi menjadi pemerintah ialah seluruh dunia ini akan dipenuhi oleh kezaliman dan penindasan. Para pemerintahnya adalah orang-orang yang zalim-zalim, manakala yang kaya dan kuat menindas yang miskin dan lemah. Yang miskin dan bodoh juga berbuat zalim dengan melakukan jenayah seperti mencuri. Ulama memandang rendah orang awam dan orang awam pula hilang hormat kepada golongan ulama.
5.Lama pemerintahan Imam Mahdi ke atas seluruh dunia ini adalah tujuh tahun. Tujuh tahun yang dimaksudkan adalah relatif, bukan dengan erti tujuh tahun seperti yang mampu kita bayangkan pada hari ini. Untuk keterangan yang lebih jelas lagi tentang ini, lihat pada bahagian-bahagian akhir pemerintahan Imam Mahdi pada bab-bab yang akan datang. Angka tujuh sebenarnya adalah lambang berkat dan banyak, bukan ertinya tepat-tepat tujuh tahun seperti yang disabdakan.

Isbatur Rajat, the Book on the Doctrine of Mahdaviyat
Before the birth of Hazrat Mahdi (a.s.) [255 A.H] eminent scholars and companions of Imams (a.s.) compiled a lot of books containing traditions about glad-tidings concerning reappearance of Imam Mahdi (a.s.).
It is a lamentable fact that most of these books were lost due to the contingencies of time and were unable to reach us thereby becoming extinct. The books that have reached us, due to grace of Allah upon us, include a book authored by a noble and eminent companion of Imam (a.s.), Fazl bin Shazan-e-Nishapuri and titled as "Isbatur Rajat'.
Janab Abu Muhammad Fazl bin Shazan bin Khaleel-e-Nishapuri was a revered companion of Imam Ali-un-Naqi (a.s.), an expert in Jurisprudence and polemics. The author died in 260 AH in the year coinciding with the death of Imam Hasan Askari (a.s.) and commencement of occultation and vicegerency of Imam Mahdi (a.s.). Due to this it becomes evident that the aforementioned book is either written before 260 AH or at least in that year, and thereby the value of the book increases, because of it being ancient. This book plays a significant role in context of doctrine of Mahdaviyat.
In bibliographical books approximately eighty books of Fazl bin Shazan are listed. Out of these, two books, viz "AL-Ghaibat' and "Isbatur Rajat’ deal with Imam Mahdi (a.s.) covering topics like occultation, its incidences, reappearance and so on. Janab Sayed Muhammad Mir Lauhi Isfehani (exp.1083 AH) in his book "Kefayatul-Mahdi" has referred to the book "Al-Gaibat" and has copied traditions from it. But unfortunately "Al-Ghaibat" is extinct and contents of this book can be had only from those sources which have used it extensively.
Also "Isbatur Rajat" has not reached us completely and only extracts from this book has remained. Sayed Bahauddin Ali Naili Najafi, author of book "Anwarul-Masfiyya" in ninth century compiled the extracts of the book "Isbatur Rajat" and a quite a few copies of it are available currently. Out of which one is available in library of Ayatullah ul Uzama Sayed Mohsin Al Hakim (r.a.). Other is in library of Astaane-Quds-e-Razawi, Mashad-e-Muqaddas. All the copies date back to manuscript collected and written by Sheikh Hurre Amili (exp. 1104). We, by Allah's will, desire to present a copy of it in this essay.
This book contains traditions giving glad tidings about Imam Mahdi (a.s.) and carries more weight as it is written before the death of Imam Hasan Askari (a.s.) and it serves as a manifest proof for those who doubt the existence of Imam Mahdi (a.s.), as many uninformed writers accuse Shias of concocting the doctrine of Mahdaviyat after the death of Imam (a.s.). This book not only serves as a reply to such slanderous talks but also is a storehouse of many valuable traditions concerning occultation and characteristics of Imam Mahdi (a.s.).
Janab Fazl bin Shazan has given it an aura of authenticity by narrating the traditions from great companions of Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s.) like Safwan bin Yahya, Muhammad bin Abi Umair and Hasan bin Ali bin Fazzal. Apart from this, traditions from Imam Ali-un-Naqi (a.s.) and Imam Hasan Askari (a.s.) uninterrupted from Abdullah bin Hasan-e-Khatib, Ahmed bin Ishaq Qummi and Muhammad bin Ali bin Hamza and so on.
Late Janab Sayed Ali Naili, the one who abridged this book has selected only twenty traditions for the purpose and rest of us have not reached us.
Though this book is titled as Isbatur Rajat only seventh and sixteenth traditions deal with Rajat. This essay is based on above book and keeping in mind the limited space the chains of narrators are purposely omitted and also the Arabic version.The traditions which do not explicitly deal with the topic of Imam Mahdi (a.s.) are also omitted and those readers who are interested in the whole book are requested to refer to the periodical "TURASONA" (1409 AH, ISSUE N0.5). Attempt has been made to present a simple and lucid translation, thus providing parantheses as an additional tool.
Isbatur Rajat (Abridged)
1) Responding to the query of Sulaym bin Qais, Imam Ameerul Momineen Ali (a.s.) had said: "Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) kept his blessed hand on my chest and beseeched Allah to bestow upon me knowledge, intellect, cognizance, wisdom and light and invoked to Allah thus: O my lord! Give him retentive memory and make him memorize the things instructed to him by me.
I once professed humbly before Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) saying that may my parents be sacrificed on you, from the day you invoked for me I have not forgotten a single thing. Have written down all your instructions and neglected nothing. Are you worried about my forgetting?
Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) replied: O brother! I am not worried about either your ignorance or your loss of memory, I simply intended to pray for you. Verily! Allah has ordained obedience of you and your companions along with my obedience and has chosen you to be my representative. He (Allah) has said:
O you who believe! Obey Allah, its messenger and those in authority among you.
I inquired as to who are they? He replied they are my successors. It does not matter to them if people do not follow them. They are with Quran and will not be separated from Quran till they meet me at fountain of Kausar. My nation benefits from their presence. Even the rain does not pour without their permission. Prayers are accepted through their intercession and calamities are warded off through their mediation.
I requested the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) to narrate their names and he narrated thus: You O Ali are the first among them and then keeping his hand on Hasan (a.s.) stated him to be second one of them. Then he kept his hand on Husain (a.s.) and asserted that he is to follow Hasan (a.s.) in vicegerency. He said after Husain (a.s.) the responsibility of guidance will fall on son of Husain (a.s.) whose agnomen will be Zainul Abedin (a.s.) and further asked me to convoy his salutations to him as he shall be born in my time. After him will be Muhammad Baqir (a.s.), the one who will split, His knowledge. He will be followed by their sons Jafar Sadiq, Moose Kazim, Ali Reza, Muhammad Taqi, Ali un Naqi, Hasan (Peace be upon them all) till the chain reaches to HUJJAT-AL-QAEM, the son of Hasan (a.s.) who will take revenge with my enemies and will fill the earth with Justice and Equity as it shall be filled with injustice and oppression.
Then Ameerul Momineen (a.s.) said, "By Allah! I visualize all of them who will pledge allegiance to him between Hajre Aswad and Maqame Ibrahim, not only this, I am aware of their names and tribes."
Hummad bin Isa states that he narrated this tradition in front of Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s.). Imam wept and confirmed the words of Sulaym and stated that he heard this from his grandfather Husain ibn Ali (a.s.) and he heard it from his father Husain (a.s.) and he heard it from his father at the time Sulaym bin Qais asked it from him.
2) Imam Hasan (a.s.) said he heard it from his grandfather about Imams after him, that they will be twelve in number similar to Nuqaba of Bani Israel. Allah has bestowed them with my knowledge and wisdom and O Hasan! you are from them. Then Imam Hasan (a.s.) asked as to when the reappearance of Qaem from his Ahle Bait will take place?. He replied, His reappearance is like occurrence of the Day of Judgement, Allah has kept it a secret from people of skies and earth. He will appear all of a sudden.
3) It is narrated from Imam Baqir (a.s.) that Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) said to Ameerul Momineen: "Quraish will prevail upon you when you will strive to unveil and all will join hands in oppressing you. If you get partisans and helpers face them strongly and if you are left alone be patient and protect your self. Martyrdom is chasing you anyway.
"Surely my son avenge those who oppress you and those who oppress your partisans. In the hereafter Allah will chastise them with a severe punishment."
Salman-e-Farsi at this stage inquired about the avenger? Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) said:"The ninth son from progeny of Husain (a.s.), the one who will reappear after a long occultation .He will spread the religion of God and will seek revenge from his enemies. He will make justice and equity prevail on earth as it shall be filled with oppression and injustice.
Salman-e-Farsi inquired again about the time when the time when he was reappear. Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) replied: "Knowledge of the time is exclusively with Allah, but there are some signs of his reappearance. like call from sky . land slides in east and west of Earth, submergence of land at Baiza." (a place between Mecca and Medina).
4) Abu Khalid-e-Kabuli says that when be went in presence of his master Imam Zainul Abedin (a.s.) and found him in a state of weeping while reading a book. I inquired: "May my parents be sacrificed on you, what book is this?”
Imam (a.s.) replied: "This book is the copy of the tablet which was gifted to Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) by Allah. It contains, apart, from names of Allah, names of His Prophets. Ameerul Momineen. my paternal uncle. Hasan bin Ali, name of my father, my name, name of my son Muhammad Baqir. his son Jafar Sadjq. his son Moosa-e-Kazim. his son Ali Reza. his son Muhammad Taqi, his son Ali-un-Naqi, his son Hasan-e-Zaki and his son Hujjat, the one who will rise (with sword). He will wreck vengeance from the enemies of God. He will reappear after a long occultation with solitary aim of filling this earth with justice and equity as it shall be full of injustice and oppression."
5) Hazrat Imam Muhammad Baqir (a.s.) narrates that Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.)conveyed to Imam Ali Ibne Abi Talib (a.s.) that: "I have more authority over believers than they themselves have on their own souls. After me such an authority will be enjoyed by you and then by Hasan, Husain, Ali Ibne Husain, Muhammad Ibne Ali, Jafar Ibne Muhammad, Moosa Ibne Jafar, Ali Ibne Musa, Muhammad Ibne Ali, Ali Ibne Muhammad, Hasan Ibne Ali and lastly son of Hasan. Hujjat the one on whom the vicegerency will conclude. He will reappear after a long occultation and will fill the earth with justice and equity as it shall be full with injustice and oppression."
6) Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s.) said: "Imam Ameerul Momineen (a.s.) was asked about the word "Itrat” in traditions of two weighty things (Hadees Saqalain). He replied: "I, my son Hasan, Husain of which the nine sons from progeny of Husain of which ninth will be Mahdi. Those people are "ITRAT" of Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) and will not separate from Quran till the lime they meet Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) at the pond of “KAUSAR'."
7) Hazrat Imam Muhammad Baqir (a.s.) said that Imam Husain (a.s.) said lo his companions one night before martyrdom that the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) informed him about his martyrdom to this effect: "O my son! You will travel to Iraq, till the land by the name of Amra and Karbala. You will be martyred along with some chosen companions."
Then Imam Husain (a.s.) continued saying:" The words of Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) are going to be actualized. Tomorrow I will meet my grandfather Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.).Those of you who intend to go depart in darkness of night with my consent. Imam exhorted too much but nobody left. All enunciated in solitary voice: "By Allah we shall never leave you alone and will follow you in every aspect."
Observing such steadfastness of his Companions Imam Husain (a.s.) said: "I give you glad tidings of paradise. By Allah! after martyrdom we will reside in graves till the time Allah wishes. Then Allah will cause us to return from our graves at the time of reappearance of Qaem. We will take revenge from the unjust, we will witness with our own eyes that the unjust are shackled and chained.
Then Imam Muhammad Baqir (a.s.) was asked as to who was" Qaem". Imam replied seventh one from my progeny. He will reappear after a long occultation and will fill the earth with justice and equity as it shall be full of injustice and oppression.
8) Abu Khalido Kabuli says that he asked his master Imam Zainul Abedin (a.s.) as to who are; the one whose obedience is obligatory after Holy Prophet of Islam (s.a.w.a.).
Imam replied! O Kabuli! ‘Ulil Amr' are the ones appointed by Allah as guides and leaders and their obedience is compulsory and they are Ameerul Momineen. His son Hasan, my father Husain and aft or him the office passed on to me...." After saying this Imam became silent.
I asked: "It has been narrated from Ameerul Momineen that this earth can never he devoid of a representative of Allah. So who is Imam after you?"
Imam replied! "My son Muhammad who is known in heavenly books as "Baqir", the one who will split the knowledge. After him the Imam will be his son Jafar who is known by the name of 'Sadiq' in divine books."
I interrupted and questioned," Why is he called ^Sadiq' (truthful) when you all are truthful?"
Imam clarified:" My grandfather narrated from Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) that he said that when the birth of my son Jafar bin Muhammad bin Ali bin Husain bin Ali ibn Abu Talib takes places keep his name as 'Sadiq' because one person from his fifth generation will also bear the name of Jafar and will wrongly claim vicegerency. His name will be Jafar Kazzab. He will ascribe wrong things to Allah and will claim the position for which he is not entitled. He will not only oppose his father but will also bear jealousy towards his brother. This is the person who will strive to tear apart the veil of occupation of Imam."
After saying this Imam wept profusely and added: "As if I am seeing Jafar Kazzab exhorting the King of his time to go and search for Imam and lay his claim to the inheritance of his father and usurp it wrongly."
I felt surprised and asked Imam " 0 son of Prophet! Is this going to happen?"
He replied: "By Allah certainly this is inscribed in a book which Allah gave to Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) narrating in it suffering of every kind which is to befall on us ".
I inquired as to what will happen after that.
Imam replied, "Occupation of twelfth Imam will continue for a long time and those with firm faith will await his reappearance and those people who are awaiting for the Imam are better than the people of all times because Allah has bestowed them with intelligence and knowledge that occupation will be perceived by them as proximity. Their position in times of occupation is like the ones who fought with Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.). They are our true Shias, who will invite people towards religion secretly and openly."
Imam added:" To await reappearance is real pleasure."
9) Muhammad bin Abdul Jabbar narrates that Imam Hasan Askari (a.s.) was asked about Imam after him?
Imam (a.s.) replied "After me proof of Allah on earth shall be my son whose name and agnomen are that of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) and he is the last in chain of vicegerency"
He was asked about his mother and he said, "He will be born from the granddaughter of Qaiser and will remain hidden from the eyes of the people.
He will reappear and will fight Dajjal and thereby spread justice and equity on earth as it shall he full of injustice and oppression."
10) Ahmad bin Ishaq relates that he heard from Imam Hasan Askari (a.s.) relating about his successor thus:
"Praise is due to Allah Who did not cause me to die before showing me his representative.
He will bear the same name and agnomen as that of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.).
Allah will protect him in occupation and then will make him reappear, thereby filling the earth with justice and equity as it shall be full with injustice and oppression."
11) Muhammad bin Ali states that he heard Imam Hasan-e-Askari (a.s.) saying, "The representative of Allah was born on 15th Shaaban 255 A.H. at dawn.. He got the bounty of receiving bath first from Rizwan, the treasurer of Heaven, from the fountain of Kausar and Salsabil.
After that he was given bath by Janabe Hakima, daughter of Imam Muhammad Taqi (a.s.)."
After this, the narrator asked Imam concerning his mother and to this Imam said she was a princess. Her name was 'Susan' but she will also be called as 'Rehana', 'Faisal' and 'Nargis.'
12) It is narrated from Ibrahim bin Muhammad bin Faras-e-Nishapuri that he says, "Amr bin Auf was a 'Nasebi' (enemy of Able Bait) and a staunch enemy of Shias. On getting the information about his intentions to murder me, I felt afraid and bid fare well to my family members and went to the house of Imam Hasan Askari (a.s.) and intended to flee after that. When I was with Imam Hasan Askari (a.s.), I noticed a boy who was sitting besides Imam, having a shining face like a moon. I was expectedly impressed and on the verge of forgetting my problem.
"At that time the boy asked me, calling me by my name, to shed the fear of being killed as Allah will keep me away from his (Amr bin Auf) evil desire. I was amazed and then in a low voice asked Imam (a.s.) about the boy who is aware of inner problems"
Imam replied that he is my son and proof of Allah after me. He will be in a long occupation and when this earth is overburdened with corruption he will reappear and fill the earth with justice and equity.
"I inquired his name and was informed that he shares the name and agnomen with Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) It is not permitted to use his name till Allah bestows him with an empire. Then Imam asked me not to disclose what I heard to anyone except who are trustworthy"
I paid my tribute to Imam Hasan-e-Askari (a.s.) and his son Imam Mahdi (a.s.). Soon I was informed by my uncle (Ali bin Faraz) that Moatmid Abbasi deputed his brother to arrest and kill Amr bin Auf. He was arrested and chopped to pieces. Praise is due to Allah Who is the Cherisher of the whole universe."
13) Abdullah bin Husain-e-Katib narrates that Imam Hasan-e-Askari (a.s.) said," Caliphs of Bani Umayyah and Bani Abbas raised their swords against us due to two reasons,
1) they were aware of the fact that Khilafat was not their right and we can claim it and get it.
2) They were cognizant of traditions which predicted the end of their rulership at the hands of Qaem, who will be from us.
They undoubtedly believed themselves to be the aggressors. Due to this they desired to kill us and put an end to the matter But Allah did not allow them to carry on their evil desire, and perfected his light. Even though the polytheists might be averse to it"
14) Imam Jafar-e-Sadiq (a.s.) is reported to have said that there is no miracle of Prophet (s.a.w.a.) which Allah will not manifest at hands of our Qaem, thus concluding the argument and proof on people.
15) Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) said, "Ten sign will certainly appear before the day of judgment and they are Sufyani, Dajjal, Smoke. Dabbatul Arz (the one who will walk on earth), Reappearance of Qaem, Rising of Sun from west, Descent of Isa, Submergence of land in east Azerbaijan peninsula, blazing fire from land of Eden. Rush of people toward resurrection."
16) Imam Jafar-e- Sadiq (a.s.) cautioned his followers thus, "Seek refuge in Allah from the evil of Sufyani, Dajjal and other mischiefs." He was asked "O Son of Prophet (s.a.w.a.)! We know Dajjal in light of your traditions but who is this Sufyani and other corruptions and who is going to spread these?"
Imam replied, "From the barren lands of Syria a person from the progeny of Uthman bin Abu Sufyan will rise in cover of Piety.
He will claim caliphate and will receive pledge of allegiance from people, followed by Ulama who were hiding the truth and will declare him as the best person on face of earth.
“Appearance of both Sufyani and that of people with white flags i.e. Yemani will take place in the same year and month. Sufyani will rule for 20 years."
17) It is reported from Imam (a.s.) that Khurasani, Sufyani and Yemani will appear in same year and month, but none will be more near the truth than Yamani, as he shall he guided towards truth.
18) Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s.) said: "Our Qaem will gain upper hand through his charming personality and he will be helped by Allah. Earth will contract for him and will reveal all her treasure, at his disposal. Allah will make His religion triumph over all other religions, at his hands, even though the polytheists might be averse to it. His empire will extend from East to West and will civilize all the destroyed nations, H. Isa (a.s.), the spirit of Allah will descend and pray behind him."
One person asked Imam about the time of his reappearance. To this, Imam (a.s.) narrated the signs of reappearance thus: "The time when men will resemble women and women will resemble men, increase in homosexuals and lesbians, women will drive the vehicles, wrong testimonies will be accepted and justice thrown aside, people will consider murder, fornication, bribe and usury as something usual, pious ones will be subjugated by evil ones, Sufyani will rise from Syria and Yemani from Yemen. Earth will be submerged at a place called Baida. A person from progeny of Holy Prophet (s.a.), whose name will be Ahmed bin Hasan alias Nafse Zakiyyah will be martyred between Hajre Aswad and Maqame Ibrahim. A voice will come from the sky stating that truth is with Ali and his Shias.
“When Imam will reappear his back will be towards Kaaba and will be accompanied by 313 followers, commencing the crusade against injustice with the ayat of Quran.
“Whatever is the remnant of Allah, is good for you if you are amongst the believers.”
Afterwards, he will proclaim that he is last Proof of Allah upon them and His Caliph in there midst. People will salute him thus. “Peace be upon you, O Remnant of Allah in this earth.”
When 4000 people shall gather around him he will march from Mecca and prohibit worship of any other God except Allah. This will occur after a long occultation.
Same tradition is also narrated from Imam Muhammad-e-Baqir (a.s.).
19) Imam-e-Jafar-e-Sadiq (a.s.) said: “Some people will disappear from their beds. Their numbers will be 313 as that of people of Badr and will reach Mecca. at dawn. This is about (he saying of Allah, 'Wherever you are Allah will bring you out."
(Surah Baqarah: 148)
And they shall be the partisans of Qaem.
20) Ono person asked Imam -e-Jafar Sadiq (a.s.) about the time of reappearance of Qaem. Imam (a.s.) replied. "The time when deviation will increase and guidance will decrease, corruption and mischief will rise, religious reformation will virtually disappear. homosexuals and lesbians will stalk the earth. Jurist will be inclined towards the allurement of worldly desires, rich will acquire honour with help of poets and poetries, some will become monkeys and pigs. Sufyani will be killed and Dajjal will take a lead in increasing the deviation of people. On 23rd Ramazan a voice will echo from sky with the name of Qaem. He will reappear on the day of Ashura (10th Moharram). As if I am visualizing him standing between Hajare Aswad and Maqame Ibrahim. Jibrael will stand in front of him and will proclaim that allegiance is only for Allah. Heeding this people will come towards him.
May Allah include us among those who pay allegiance to him and obey him.
